McCarthy Hoping to Chat Transfers With Evans at Sir Bobby Golf Classic
Friday, 15th Jul 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy hopes to continue his ongoing transfer discussions with owner Marcus Evans over the weekend when they take part in the Sir Bobby Robson Celebrity Golf Classic at the Pestana Vila Sol course in Portugal. The Blues are understood to be in talks with Blackburn Rovers regarding the signing of winger Elliott Bennett and are also targeting Premier League loanees.

McCarthy and Evans are both regular participants in the tournament, which legendary Blues boss Robson instigated in 2004 to raise money for a homeless children’s charity, the Refugio Aboim Ascensão, which is based in Faro.

Also amongst those taking part will be Charlie Woods, Simon Milton, Terry Butcher, Russell Osman, Alan Brazil, John Wark and George Burley.

“I don’t know how much time we’ll get to spend together, but I hope to get a chat with him,” McCarthy said.

The Town manager, whose priority is adding wingers to his squad, says he and Evans maintain an open line of communication during the summer, regularly discussing the club's transfer business.

“Absolutely,” he added. “We’re kind of waiting on a number of different things that we’re trying to do. Players that we’re trying to bring in. We’ll just have to wait and see.

“But Cameron Stewart’s doing really well playing wide left and I think Bish has been excellent on the right, so we have got players who can play there.”

Town and Blackburn are understood to be discussing the terms of Bennett moving to Portman Road with the Ewood Park club keen to recoup the reported £250,000 they paid Norwich for the 27-year-old in January.

Quizzed on links with Bennett on Wednesday night, McCarthy wouldn't confirm or deny his interest, although admitted that the former Brighton and Norwich wideman is a player he likes.

With no friendly on Saturday, McCarthy is giving his squad a break: “Over the weekend [they’ll be having some time off] and then we’re back in on Monday to prepare for the Colchester game [on Wednesday] and then that’ll be us all the way through then.”

He says players will start to get more than just 45 minutes from the Colchester game onwards.

“Quite clearly it’s just been two mixed-up teams with some youngsters and some experience so far, but it might be getting to where they’re getting 60 minutes, then others will get 60 or 70 minutes at Cambridge.”

Striker Daryl Murphy returned to pre-season training on Tuesday having been given additional time off having been away with the Republic of Ireland at the Euros and McCarthy says the 33-year-old won't be involved in a game until next weekend.

“It’ll be Cambridge on Saturday that we’ll be looking at," he said. "Adam Webster has every chance of playing some part against Cambridge as well, that’s great.”

Meanwhile, former Blues striker Paul Taylor, 28, has rejoined his former club Peterborough United, having failed to find a club during 2015/16 following his release by Town during the previous season.

Do they do this on purpose, just to get a reaction?!?! I cannot surely be the only person who read this then thought: "Isn't this conversation about 3 months too late!!?" & "Surely our predicament of a severe lack of wingers deserves a bit more attention than a chat on a golf course!!?"

Still, silly me, what was I thinking, I guess the main thing is that, no one misses out on a game of golf eh?!?!.......

Very strange that they can only have have face to face talks about the future of our club on the golf course. Really makes you wonder what their priorities are.

Come on guys! Are you for real! You think this is them starting to talk transfers?!?!? Firstly the article says 'continue to talk transfers', secondly Phil has put dozens of stories since April of Mick saying he is discussing transfers and targets. All Phil is doing is highlighting some updates about Elliot Bennett and reminding people of the golf day.

If you genuinly think this is the beginning of their talks then your muppets or blinded by your hatred of McCarthy.

I am fed up of grief he and the club gets. Is he the right man for the job? I don't know but he is certainly a good man for the job and our club has been better since he joined thab before him.

Sorry, thats been building up for a while. I actually enjoyed this site before the yes Mick/no Mick clans started taking over the comment sections.

Rant over!

I have lost a bit of interest to be honest and refuse to get excited about a Blackburn reject when other teams are signing up and coming young players. No one knows what Marcus Evans's plans are for the club and we hear nothing from Him and Milne. The fact the early bird deadline of May has been extended indefinitely says it all about season ticket sales. I will continue to enjoy the match day experience but my expectations of town without quality additions is mid table and nothing more.

I only hope the Bennett move collapses, what a shocker! Why not spend an extra £500k and get O'Dowda, who joined Brizzle yesterday? We are not in the same league as most the championship now. For the first time ever, I am dreading the new season!

Big Foot Blue. I am for real and no muppet. The club is slowly going down the rankings and now not looked upon as a bigger club. The playing staff year on year are getting weaker and the football played is abysmal and shows no sign of changing. We are told it will but it won't. The gates are decreasing and desperate measures have been put in place to sell season tickets, which were put up in the 1st place!! I'm not a supporter who supports the club on a whim I go to every match regardless and have done since the 60's and yes I am one on the many who are getting worn down by the comments and football of MM.

How will MM recognise our man of mystery owner? I find the whole thing a joke that he doesn't want to be seen and over clubs must laugh at us. Time you come out of hiding ME and put your money where your mouth is and spend some money on decent players otherwise why don't you just F#ck off and let someone whose not afraid to show their face take over?

A quick few minutes to talk privately about summer transfers? Are they going to discuss it whilst both at the urinals or something?

Mick doesn't know much time he'll get to chat with Marcus...sort of sums things up. All this should have been discussed weeks ago!

Bennett is hardly a prolific goalscorer . It's another case of us looking at taking someone rejected by another club in our league - that hardly inspires confidence .Unfortunately fans will take a lot convincing about this one , not helped by the ex Norwich link . The fact that Foley has replaced him at Blackburn should sound enough warning noises .

Come on town , give us a signing to get excited about

whoops .............Feeney , not Foley

It's amazing how many people can't seem to read the words: "hopes to continue his ongoing transfer discussions with owner Marcus Evans"... and then start jumping up and down in a blind panic thinking this is the first time they will have discussed anything.

In terms of transfers see Barnsley have got Moncur and Bradshaw..good players.

Alan Lee, Kuki even Jim could be described as rejects from lesser or equal teams and all three did very well.

Can't help but agree with big foot blue, this is all about finalising deals and more negotiating, expect a signing next week hopefully harriot of Charlton

Hoppy, that's because many can't be bothered to read the story properly before commenting. People go on about Bennett being Blackburn's reject? Every player who leaves one club for another is basically a reject, as the club have allowed him to leave, so a mute point. As for his link with Norwich? Who cares? If he has the blue shirt on then he's an Ipswich player, end of. Many players have played for both clubs over the years. At the end of the day it's their job. It's no different than some1 working for Tesco going to work at sainsburys.

blues1, I know... and not only do they not read the story properly before commenting, but they seem to read the other negative comments of other people that haven't read the story properly either and give their up arrows to those. Incredible really.
Right, I'm off to go and look for some thunder and rain clouds somewhere out in all that blue sky and sunshine...

You are all very thick if you think Mccarthy doesn't have constant contact with Evans, it's quite embarrassing the lengths people go to try and criticise the manager and the club. I know you enjoy complaining but how about for once you actually support the team and manager who has pushed us from bottom of the league to play offs and just outside the play offs.

70s_Legend added 09:37 - Jul 15
This story perfectly sums up everything that is wrong with our club at the moment under Marcus Evans. For all of David Sheephanks many faults, communication and backing his manager with available funds were neither of them.

70s_Legend added 09:51 - Jul 15
and to all the people jumping to the defence of the club, highlighting in bold extracts of the statement etc......... there should be no "hoping" to have continued chats with the owner. An owner of a club should have regular ongoing conversations with the manager throughout the summer. There should be no uncertainty about having any budget/transfer discussions. We are being made to look very amateur with Mick's continued silly statements.

Checking for Ipswich transfer news is like checking your empty fridge for food. You know nothing is there, but you continue to check anyway!
