Blues Hopeful on Trio Ahead of Opener
Monday, 31st Jul 2017 17:50

On-loan Manchester City winger Bersant Celina was back in training this morning, while strike pair Joe Garner and David McGoldrick were also at Playford Road although not joining in with the rest of the squad.

Celina missed Thursday’s Open Day and Saturday’s friendly at Charlton due to the illness bug which has hit the squad in pre-season, while McGoldrick was also ruled out of the trip to the Valley as he was unwell.

Garner suffered a shoulder injury when he was sent crashing as Andre Dozzell scored Town’s goal against the Addicks. The Blues are hopeful that all three will be available for Saturday’s season opener with Birmingham at Portman Road.

Already ruled out of Saturday's match are midfielder Emyr Huws (calf), Tom Adeyemi (illness), Teddy Bishop (groin) and Luke Hyam (ankle).

Meanwhile, the Blues are reported to have made a move for an unnamed Premier League striker, however, we understand that while Town are continuing their attempts to land another frontman before Saturday, no deal is currently close to being confirmed.

Was hoping the headline would mean a trio of signings.

Yes Stuart.

I'm sticking with it, Sam Gallagher.

I'm going Dominic Calvert-Lewin (youngster from everton). He needs development from games which he won't get at Everton this season... don't think he's the answer but this wouldn't surprise me....

Why is it that with most signings we make the only person who gets to see them is the physio? Was so optimistic of what our starting line up was going to be a few weeks a go and now it's looking pretty grim again already. The squad is still so understrength to make an impression in the championship. More signings needed and fast especially as our midfield appears like it will start weaker than what it finished in may.

Hasn't Adeyemi been ill all pre season? Odd one.

Stilll good news regarding those returning. Let's hope they are match fit.

We could certainly do with those players back for the Birmingham march. It underlines how three strikers is not enough, as already Garner and McGoldrick are struggling so our only striker is Sears! I think we may regret releasing Pitman for free without a replacement, realised a bit more each time he scores (two on Saturday for Portsmouth at Crawley).

Goodness knows what our second string against Luton in the cup will look like!

What a suprise, Hyam and Bishop injured.

Mark while I agree with you Pitman did at least go for an undisclosed fee didn't he?

What on earth is wrong with Adeyemi? His illness seems to go on and on!

Would love it to be Sam Gallagher, but I can only see it being an unknown youngster who won't be given any game time by Dino!

You do have to wonder if the Adeyemi illness is a cover story for something more serious / sinister.

And I was hoping we were signing a trio of defenders to replace the no hopers we have now.

Mojo - I read about an 'undisclosed fee' elsewhere, but on here it was reported that no fee was involved:

Pitman Close to Joining Portsmouth 13th Jul 2017 09:32
TWTD understands that Blues striker Brett Pitman is close to joining League One Portsmouth. 39

I suspect no fee was involved and we just wanted him off the wage book.

If any of the starting back 4 from Charlton are in the team Saturday then we are in trouble. The defending was so keystone cops that the 3 mentioned in the story will need to score at least 5 between them. Due to the fact Dino stated a couple of weeks ago that he was "happy" with his defensive options I am very very worried. Spence was best of the 4 and I would JUST keep him in. The CB pairing MUST be Iorfa & Webster. Chambers is an utter liability ANYWHERE on the pitch and smith is so slow he could make a darts player look like a sprinter. And as for Knudsen what can I say apart from go away you're totally useless. Kenlock HAS to play.

Our defence is not strong enough and needs additions especially if Excuse plays. How he can get anywhere near the starting XI is embarrassing. I've seen milk turn quicker than him. An elephant has more skill and passing ability and if we are to avoid another relegation fight he must be back up at best.

ME needs to make a very drastic call. He must sack McCarthy now to give us any hope at all then he needs to front up and compete in the spending stakes. I don't mean with the Wolves of this world but we need to be up with the Barnsley Bristol City Brentford types.

If not we are doomed coz our squad is littered with absolute dross. And Dino will always revert to type and play 7 at the back.

Should forget about Hyam and Bishop... They both need to take a long hard look at themselves before constructive loan moves maybe

Fully agree with prebbs007 regarding Knudsen and Skuse. Both seem to be very decent chaps character wise but the contribution they bring is it great. Skuse did ok in his first season but has actually got slower since and that is slow considering he has always had the pace of a glacier.
He now relies on reading the game and just trying to put a foot in. He cannot recover once he loses possession.
Knudsen has tried but would becer make any other championship team. He is a headless chicken.
Rather ironic that he has achieved what most Town players would dream of by scoring twice against Naridge.

I would like to see a fresh face in replace if Skuse and certainly Kenlock to start at left back.

Prebbs couldn't agree more.At least three more quality signings are required
for us to even compete, otherwise the bookies prediction of bottom three will
unfortunately really happen.

I reckon it's tony cottee. Noticed he spent a lot of time reporting at Portman road for sky sports. Either that it's lee chapman or Ian dowie. All young and hungry forwards who are presently better than what we have at present

Could do a lot worse than bring Shane McLoughlin in to the squad. He is on good form and played well in recent games.
Would be bright and energetic, similar to Sears.
