Town Eyeing Tottenham Youngster

Town are considering a loan move for 18-year-old Tottenham left winger Andros Townsend. The Leytonstone-born wideman is yet to make a first team appearance for Spurs but is tipped for a big future.

The Blues sent a representative to watch the quick winger in action in a friendly against Chelsea at Tottenham’s training ground on Wednesday. The game had been arranged to show off the clubs’ young talent to sides interested in taking their players on loan.

Townsend came through the Spurs academy and went on loan to Yeovil Town at the end of the 2008/09 season, scoring one goal in 10 starts.

The 6ft tall midfielder spent the first half of this season at Leyton Orient, where former Blue Geraint Williams was then boss, netting two goals in 20 starts and six appearances.

In January the England U16 and U19 international moved on to the MK Dons, where he made eight starts and one sub appearance, scoring twice.

A left winger is very much on manager Roy Keane’s summer wish-list with Peterborough’s George Boyd his main target. However, with other clubs also interested in the Scotland B international and cash-strapped Peterborough trying to achieve a fee of £2 million for the former Stevenage man, the Blues may instead recruit Townsend on a season-long loan.

a quick winger...sounds like the sort of player that we need, if he had same impact as jack did last season, then i certainly wont complain. certainly sounds the part, but certainly hope he doesn't arrive within any sort of wickham deal!! must keep connor!!

sounds like our sort of player 2 goals in 20 games should fit right in here could be a candidate for top scorer next season but how do sunderland get anything out of the deal if hes a spurs player ?

Tis that time of year when every man and his dog is linked with this that and the other, but we do need at least two real left sided midfield players.

Gary McSheffrey & Marlon Harewood both on Bosman's? Don't know if we are in the market for Hooper, but I would suggest he would be wasting his talent going to Celtic and only having 4 Proper league fixtures to play in! If Cardiff get promoted Chopra will not come and who would blame him if he has the chance to play Premier League football. Sign Townsend and he can hopefully set plenty of chances up for the striker I am sure Keane will be signing soon. Anyone have any other suggestion?

Sounds promising, also very quick and strong which is something we need. I dont suppose they would sell him, but he would be good to get in on loan.

We dont want to get reliant on loan players again, however. But if they can get us into the prem, it doesn't matter!

@BennyBlue

Seriously mate, grow up. The whole Sunderland thing is tiresome and the fact he hasn't scored a lot might have something to do with the fact he's a winger.

Trying watching some football before you start moaning.

Bennyblue, wingers are supposed to cross the ball in, not be relied upon as a main source of goals. I suppose by your reckoning, wingers like Aaron Lennon (15 goals in 138 Spurs appearances) and Stanley Matthews (71 goals in 709 career appearances) are/were rubbish because of their goalscoring records then right?!

It's always the same with you, always trying to see the negative side in every news story.

Bennyblue. We could win the championship,10 points clear and I'm sure you would still find something to moan about. As DanTheMan says the Sunderland thing has died of death! Your so negative, I bet your an employers dream. (That's if you work yet) grow up and start the back our football club.

Saw him play for Orient a few times last season - he hit the bar with a great shot at Carrow Road. He has potential, but he needs to improve his final delivery. He's a bit like Darren Currie with a bit of pace.

LOL bennyblue - that's pretty funny for you. (I'm guess it was tongue in cheek?)

Does anyone else have a feeling that we might be getting this guy on loan as part of a deal for Connor Wickham? I hope not but I sense a really unimpressive deal in the pipeline...

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure this guy is quite useful, but I'm not sure I want him here for a year as part of a deal to sell our most promising youngster, just to send him back to Spurs when he is getting good. Colback was a great loan signing, but he has gone now and left a big hole in our squad. Would prefer loans with view to permanent deals, so we don't have to start over again when things go well!

links, links, rumours and no friggin signings, doesnt this just remind you all of the past 12 months.............

He sounds promising and may be worth bringing in, although I would prefer to see a permanent signing in the left-midfield position. The trouble with loanees is that they have to go back, and we could spend a season developing a player for Tottenham without benefiting ourselves (indeed it may stand in the way of progress of one of our own players). Personally, I would like to see permanent signings with loans just being a nice extra rather than relying on them to fill key positions.

As for Civelli, he looked a decent player but even if he returns in August he will have been out for 17 months with a very serious injury. I think we should expect very little from him, then if he does come back strongly it will be a very nice bonus.

naaridge1coly7, I understand your frustration but we're only halfway through May - the play-offs haven't even finished yet! I don't see too many other clubs doing transfer business at the moment, if we still haven't signed anyone in two months time then it may be time to panic but its a bit premature right now. The only thing I'm worried about is what Mungo just mentioned, I'd texted my Spurs supporting friends earlier about the very same thing...

I'm with Mungo too, but if we can improve the squad without breaking the bank that has to be a good thing too, it's in the best interests of all for this type of player to go out on loan to the lower leagues, and that's just where we are! Let's not forget our own station . . . . can't see how we can be too fussy.

Look at some of the players we have signed, now see how loans can be more attractive to a Club with a limited budget!

It's all rumour at this stage - BUT this guy is apparently very good. A good back up for Civelli - if he makes a return that is!

Any link to a Spurs player makes me a little nervous after their 5 million bid for Wickham!

Taking a chance on unknowns can either be genious or just dreadful. Keano should just do some homework on him and see if he would fit the bill
