Town Chasing Tranmere Left-Back
Town Chasing Tranmere Left-Back
Tuesday, 10th May 2011 20:44

Town are amongst a number of Championship sides interested in signing 21-year-old Tranmere left-back Aaron Cresswell.

The Liverpool-born player has made 71 starts and nine sub appearances for Rovers, scoring six goals, having come through the youth system at Prenton Park.

Cresswell, who is 5ft 7in tall, is out of contract at the end of the season but due to his age and having been offered a new deal at Prenton Park, the League One side would be entitled to compensation when he moves on.

A set piece specialist,tough-tackling Cresswell likes to get forward and played on the left of midfield when progressing through the ranks at Tranmere.

'set piece specialist' - like the sound of that

Another exciting link: a young player but with plenty of experience under his belt. We will need a set-piece specialist if Bullard moves on, as no one wants another season of Leadbitter corners and free-kicks!

I've sign the lad play about 3 times, but didn't obviously stand out in a poor Tranmere side. Hope a scout has seen something that I haven't!!

Quality player who really would add the 'aggression and toughness' that PJ has noted that we lack. Kennedy is getting on and will prb only feature in around 20 games next season, I do rate O'conner but Crewsell is defiantly better. Also, desperately need a dead ball specialist, even if JB joins a left footer would add alot. If JB dosen't join, we would have Leadbitter taking our set pieces :(

Does anyone have any idea how much we would have to pay in compensation to get Cresswell ? Would we have to pay the equivalent of his contacts value ?

Is 6 goals in 71 starts a decent return for a left back? Sounds okay to me? PJ wants goals from the rest of the team, if he can wade in with 2/3 a season from there, it's a start?

No substance in this whatsoever, but, I have a 'gut feeling' on Nugent guys. Like I say, no substance in it at all, but a feeling. TIme will tell I suppose.

I've always rated Edwards delivery into the box and long shots - would have thought he would have made far more sense as our set piece taker last season.. :s

ITFC4daprem - Leadbitter only took set-pieces when Bullard was out. Also, I think you should post on the forum... http://www.twtd.co.uk/mb.php you'll be more than welcome!

ok the. i think we need some more out and out left back cover. Delaney is NOT a left back, Oconnor plays in several positions and Kennedy seems to have persistent hamstring troubles.

It is strange to be a "set piece specialist" at this young age of 21?! Anyways I don't know the boy so if it is true I will just rely on PJ's call! And to add on to the discussion - yes we need a left back - Kennedy is getting too old and get injured quite often and O'Connor is no good for the premiership...

Sounds good to me, in PJ i trust. I like that we are interest in young players aswell as looking for the more experience players. That combination is what is required to win promotion !!

Can he cope with the championship? or premership? He only 21 but will do us good and still learning. also we need good midfield player.

Patrice Evra is 5 foot 8 and he's one of the best left backs in the world

Height isn't so important at full back, yes it can be useful but it's not the be all and end all

I like O'Connor and would love to have seen him given more of a chance given the fact he looked fairly promising but I fear he's probably out of here, Kennedy is solid enough when fit but he doesn't really venture forward given his age which is far from ideal.

This lad sounds like he could be alright, there must be lower league players out there who are better than what we've got in our current full back areas. You have to say Norwich did pretty well with Tierney and Martin.

Sounds promising but do we need him?

Like the specialist bit, especially if Jimmy doesn't sign.

A mate who is Tranmere Rovers season ticket holder says: "he has come on leaps and bounds this season and has one hell of a shot on him". Sounds good to me!

If Leadbitter is still in the team to have any part in set pieces next season we needn't concern ourselves with promotion thoughts!

Not seen him play - but think we need a left-back. Kennedy is injury-prone, O'Dea is back at Celtic and O'Conner is out of favour (goodness knows why!). Delaney and Smith are NOT left-backs.

Right-back is another problem area, along with needing a keeper and replacement for McAuley. So potentiallty a new back 5 next year (with exception of Delaney perhaps)!

tractorcam, yes of course we need him. full back, both left & right has been a problem 4 us this season. think its great that we are looking 4 players of this kind who'll b hungry 2 succeed at a higher level.
