Ingimarsson Set to Join Chopra at Town
Ingimarsson Set to Join Chopra at Town
Friday, 10th Jun 2011 17:14

Released Reading central defender Ivar Ingimarsson looks set to join today’s new signing Michael Chopra at Portman Road later this summer.

The 33-year-old is now believed to be back home in Iceland on holiday but we understand a deal is likely to be completed on his return later in the month or in July when his Royals contract officially comes to an end, having been at Portman Road for talks and to undergo a medical on Wednesday, not Thursday as we previously reported.

Capped 30 times by his country, Ingimarsson began his career in his home country with Valur and IBV before joining Torquay United on loan in October 1999.

A £200,000 switch to Brentford followed a month later, then in July 2002, having been linked with George Burley's Blues, the 6ft ½in tall defender joined Wolves on a free transfer but made little impact at Molineux before moving on to Reading for £175,000 in October 2003.

Since then Ingimarsson, a close friend of former Blue Hermann Hreidarsson, has been a hugely influential figure at the Madejski Stadium, making 276 starts and five sub appearances, scoring 12 goals and also captaining the side. Injuries, however, limited his involvement to 13 starts and one appearance from the bench during 2010/11.

Town are also understood to have made an offer for Preston’s Irish international Sean St Ledger and have been linked with Bournemouth’s Jason Pearce with Paul Jewell likely to be looking for two central defenders this summer to replace the exiting Gareth McAuley and his deputy Troy Brown, while youngster Tom Eastman has also left the club.

Jewell and chief executive Simon Clegg are continuing to talk to a number of potential additions and it may well be that there could be further signings before the completion of Ingimarsson’s move.

Sorry, very excited! But does this make sense? Has he undergone a medical last Wednesday? Or to undergo one this coming Wednesday? If the latter, isn't he on holiday?

Anyway, it's been a great day for Town fans!

I was hoping Ingimarsson would sign today or tomorrow to follow Chopra, but now sounds like it could drag on for weeks! If he was here for a medical on Wednesday why not sign then rather than going away on holiday to Iceland?

Injury concerns aside - he is a decent centre half. St. Ledger would be nice as well with Delaney/Smith as back-up.

Baldman - Could it be that the club feels that there are better players out there for the money offered to Norris and Macauley? Perhaps PJ had some say in this.

Things are beginning to take shape. But we really don't have anything in central midfield. We need at least a new defensive midfielder and a new attacking creative midfielder. Healy, Leadbitter, Hyam... Not very exciting.

A 33 year old defender not good enough for Reading?
Oh dear!

Partnered with someone like St Ledger, We could be very solid at the back! Bring on St Ledger, Treacy and Haroun and its go time!

Why don't people read what's in front of them? We can't sign him yet because he's still under contract to Reading.

Ely_Blue added 18:09 - Jun 10
We couldn't sign him before he went as he is still a Reading player technically just like Norris & Gmac are still technically town players til 1st July

Agree with arc. A good day for us today but we do need some quality (defensive and attack) in midfield. If Wickham stays (and if we play 4-4-2) we'll have two good goalscorers but lack of quality balls in was a major weakness last season. Still a very good start -lets hope for more.

Fantastic if it all happens. Could be like Mogga when he joined. Could still have 3 or 4 years as a top defender.
