Jewell: Keeper Loan Might Be Tough Ask
Jewell: Keeper Loan Might Be Tough Ask
Wednesday, 14th Sep 2011 08:57

Boss Paul Jewell says the Blues might find it hard to persuade other managers to allow their keepers to move to Portman Road on loan as they’re unlikely to play games. West Ham youngster Marek Stech was on trial with Town earlier this week, but we understand the Czech U21 international has now left, with another club where he stands more of a chance of playing games showing interest.

Jewell is looking for cover for first choice David Stockdale, whose loan from Fulham includes a 24-hour recall clause, and Arran Lee-Barrett.

Speaking at the end of last week, Jewell said bringing in another keeper on a temporary basis may not be easy: “If I ring up a manager asking if I can take a goalkeeper on loan to sit on the bench, he’s not going to do it. That’s the difficulty.

“It’s one where we’re looking to the future. We know we’re in the hands of Fulham a little bit with Stocky. We knew that when we took him, we knew it was a risk but think it’s a risk worth taking for such a high quality goalkeeper.

“But he could go back at any time. We’ve got Arran Lee-Barrett, we’ve got Richard Wright still training with us, but in the long-term we need a young goalkeeper or one that’s coming into his prime.

“We’re not going to be able to keep Stocky [beyond the end of the season] I wouldn’t have thought. If Fulham were going to sell him we wouldn’t be able to afford him. We’ve one eye on the future really - we need that top goalkeeper coming through.”

Goalkeeper-coach Malcolm Webster, who has now had his short-term contract extended until the end of the season, says plenty of potential signings are being eyed: “We have already formed a list of potential targets which we are adding to and taking away. We have two other lists — one for possible replacements if David Stockdale has to go back and one for free transfers.

“The difficulty with young goalkeepers is that if they are currently playing, do you want to bring them to your club at the moment and then not play them?

“Playing games is such an important part of their development. It is a very delicate one. We are travelling round the country and watching them in games to ensure we get the right one.”

Trialist Stech, 21, is unlikely to get games with West Ham, even in their reserves, so might have been interested in a switch to Town, but he is now believed to be the subject of loan interest from another club where he would have a greater chance of playing first team matches. Earlier in the month, League One Yeovil wanted the former Slavia Prague youngster as cover.

One of the other keepers on Jewell and Webster's list may be West Brom’s Luke Daniels, who was recently watched by Blues assistant manager Chris Hutchings.

Elsewhere, Jewell was spotted at last night's game between Sheffield United and Huddersfield at Bramall Lane, which the Terriers won 3-0.

The Blues have previously been linked with Blades striker Ched Evans, a second half sub last night, and defender Matt Lowton, while one of the weekend tabloids claimed that Town are amongst a number of Championship clubs interested in taking midfielder Stephen Quinn, ex-Blue Alan Quinn's younger brother, on loan. United boss Danny Wilson has subsequently said he is not looking to allow Quinn to move on.

Meanwhile, a Town reserves side, including the likes of Ívar Ingimarsson and Nathan Ellington, is playing a behind-closed-doors friendly against Gillingham this afternoon.

While today’s game isn’t open to the public, the Blues have confirmed that spectators will be welcome at some of this season’s reserves matches, all of which will be friendlies with Town having withdrawn from the league.

Paul- In Jan, put £2.5 Million in and Buy Loach, why not? half a season as backup or even pushing Stockdale for first choice, then he'll be first choice for 2012/2013

Surely getting in a loan goalkeeper to back up a loan goalkeeper doesn't make much sense? There must be enough free agents out there who would do a perfectly good job

That EX Reading keeper - not young but on free.

Hopefully Jewells trip to watch Huddersfield was to look at their keeper Smithies who on the odd occasion I've seen a Huddersfield game has looked a very good prospect and commentators have said it themselves but don't know if he played last night.
Jewell is obviously looking for a long term highly rated youngster to take us forward and clearly doesn't see Richard Wright as an alternative to Stockdale or he'd have been offered a contract and would be at least on the bench, just a shame that he's never been able to get his form back that he had with us in his early years because at his age, 33 I believe he could well have 5-7 years left in him and that would allow Cropper a chance to develop and take over if he's the keeper many of us think he is.

KingChopra :- Good shout, quality. Why didn't somebody spot his talent when he was younger ? Unless of course, he didn't show his potential as a youngster !

Dont wory about the keeper being a tough ask. How about it being a tough ask to ask for a bit of entertainment at portman road

A bit odd that PJ realises this now. Had he not thought this through before deciding not to purchase a goalkeeper in the summer? Seems obvious to me that a loan-in should never be a first choice, for obvious reasons. Perhaps the management don't want to commit to a signing because they have high expectations of Cropper developing quickly. That said, the strategy of finding a good young keeper may not be so clever because if he is good enough how long could we hang on to him? Truth is, this constant revolving door of players in and out has become part and parcel of the game since Bosman, so it is a very different scenario now from Bobby Robson's day - regretably.

Anybody got Shane supples number? A real shame he called it a day.

The deal with Wright does not suit either party right now. The club can't pay him anything significant, so he'd rather stay a free agent and wait for something to materialise. That could be with Ipswich or elsewhere. He is effectively there as cover as Jewel has more or less said. Works well for both parties.

I'd give Richard Wright a 2 year deal. I think I'm right in that ALB's contract runs out at the end of this season. Just let that happen, and try to get another permanent younger 1st choice keeper next season. Why is Jewell making such a performance of this? Of far more importance is getting in a right back soon as possible.

Apologies for appearing to be a bit dim witted but why cant Wrighty be cover?..he woukld have found a club by now if someopne wanted him....and concentrate on getting a right back in and forget the goalkeeper option for now! we still have young cropper, can he be the "one for the Future " hes banging on about?...simples!!!

Jewell likes to communicate but someone at Portman Road needs to coach him on what he is saying.
Today it was we will struggle to get a keeper in
Yesterday- Suffolk is 2 hours from anywhere
Monday- we are not gritty enough
last week- Suffolk is not an attractive place to live and before we need new players because those we have are not good enough
etc etc etc

Maybe it is the truth but, its all negative and I fear is a reflection on Jewells current state of mind, motivation and desire. It just sounds like he does not want to be here. If so it could be argued that this is being transmitted to the players and accounts for some of the performances to date- although I am sure there are many other factors.

At a time when we are all down it is probably best for him to shut up and concentrate on getting the best out of what looks on paper a very good squad.
If we need a daily dose of drivel maybe someone else could step in and comment.

Pj is all talk....totally clueless as to what he is doing to ITFC. I have supported Town for over 20 years and this is the first time I'm starting to lose interest...why?....because I have no interest in how a bunch of over payed 30 year olds who don't give a sh*t about Ipswich are doing! This is not the ITFC I have grown up with....I hope we get relegated, get rid of PJ and all his 30+ year old mates and start from scratch.

BuryBlue I think you will find that Bennett was in goal for Huddersfield last night.
I too am concerned about Jewells negativity - what happened to the bubbly guy that bounced in last season. Also worried that there are so many similarites with Mr Keane i.e. tactics and team selection of square pegs in round holes. I still like the guy and trust he will turn it around but then I stuck with Keane until almost the end when he should probably have gone earlier.

"Speaking at the end of last week"...so Jewell did not say this today.

I think some of the comments are a little harsh, as we have brought in England's number two goalkeeper! Yes he could be recalled, but if his saves win us points in the meantime then he is worth having. A year ago we signed keeper for £750K+ and made him reportedly the highest paid player at the club, but Fulop did not perform and was surely a much bigger mistake that this season's goalkeeping situation?!

Jewell achieved his objective in keeping us up last season easily, and it is ridiculous to suggest getting rid of him 6 matches into a season. It's not as though we lost all 6, we do have 6 points and I am sure the team will improve once the new signings settle in and get up to 100% fitness.

Other clubs won't want to loan out keepers who won't play games for their loan sides. Agreed. But we knew that before the season started. Why then did Jewell decide to place reliance on the loan market to get in a back-up keeper? Very strange.

Any news on that right back Mr Jewell? You are aware the season's started I take it?

Stow thanks I wasn't sure as to whether he's a regular at the moment but a bit like Richard Wright when he was with us first time so just potential at the moment.
But likewise am slghtly concerned that there is the strong possibilty that we could have tow on loan keepers here.
And has been mentioned, where's our right back? I'd say as permanent signings the areas we desperately need to cover now are the keeper, right back and a holding midfielder.

This was an extremely risky piece of business that could send us down. Take a goalie on loan with and instant recall and then sell yor number one for free.

Of course PJ may have absolute faith in alb. At least the lad wants to be here, and he does have a sort of defence in front of him now.

Obvioulsy Cody Cropper is not going to make it then as he is a young keeper at our club and hasn't even been mentioned.

Bring back Supple!!!!

Agree with Kingchopra's very first comment,Loach is a young keeper who has said he wants to play for us.As for all you one thought wonders out there constantly beratig jewell and calling for his head you have got to give the man time to get his team right and not just the end of a crap season where he had to save us from the drop(for all those people who think it was Bullard, who bought him to the club) and the start of a new season with 12 players who have never played together before.Give him till november he will have it turned round by then....And sopport your club COYB.

I think we all had a reality check at the weekend, when Schwarzer nearly got a red card, phew !! that was a close shave.
So a goalkeeper is a top priority now I am still not sure whether ALB is up to it.

Forget about Evans, Like I said before, he's garbage and proved it when he came on last night. Quinn is a headless chicken and his distribution is on a par with Leadbitter!
BTW A certain Alan Lee was outstanding, and kept Rhodes on the bench until late on.
We could take a good look at Novak. A real handful.
