Town’s reported renewed move for Doncaster Rovers frontman Billy Sharp came after the Blues failed with an approach for ex-striker Jordan Rhodes, according to one of Sunday’s tabloids.

On Thursday, Town were again linked with Sharp, who was the subject of a rebuffed £2.3 million offer in the summer, along with a £300,000 bid for Rovers midfielder James Coppinger.

Sharp, 25, was mysteriously left out of Doncaster’s 16 for Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with Coventry City due to what Rovers officially referred to as a “a family problem”, while Southampton have also been linked with a £2 million deal on a loan becoming a permanent switch basis. Sharp turned down the chance to join the Saints in the summer after the clubs had agreed a £3.25 million fee.

On Saturday, Doncaster chairman John Ryan revealed that his club need to raise cash to reduce an expected £3.6 million loss this season.

Rhodes, 21, was controversially sold to Huddersfield for £850,000 by former boss Roy Keane in the summer of 2009 and has subsequently impressed for the Terriers, scoring 58 goals in 97 starts and 18 sub appearances. This season he has already netted 18 times for Huddersfield and Scotland’s U21s, including three hat-tricks.

Manchester United were linked last week with plenty of Championship clubs, including Reading and Crystal Palace, previously having been mentioned in connection with the Oldham-born frontman. If and when Rhodes moves on from Huddersfield, Town are entitled to an undisclosed percentage of the profit the League One club make on the striker, the son of former Blues keeper-coach Andy.

The link between the Blues and Rhodes junior could come from Paul Jewell’s presence at two recent Huddersfield games, however, the frontman came on as a sub with only 19 minutes remaining of one and was unused in the other.

Mark added 22:18 - Oct 30 Every one of Keane's signings without exception decreased in value or became of zero transfer value while at Ipswich, whereas Rhodes' value keeps going up and up since Keane stupidly sold him. It makes me think that Rhodes was shown the door just to pay for about a third of Priskin's transfer fee. Yes, it is history and we should move on, but it is relevant to underline how awful Keane's management here was to show what a job Jewell has on his hands to turn things round. Jewell cannot sell any of Keane's signings as they are all worthless! Sharp would be an exciting signing and with Chopra's problems we do not have a reliable goal scorer in the squad as Sharp would be. There are other areas of the team that need investment too though, such as the addition of a defensive midfielder and some much needed pace.

However, despite scoring bundles of goals, he's still playing for Huddersfield in League 1.........if he was that good, he would have been signed up by a prem club already, just like Connor has. I suspect that his size is a major factor, as the game becomes considerably more physical in the top 2 leagues and i'm not sure he could cope with it. In the few outings he had for us in the championship, he showed promise, but was very lightweight and easily muscled off the ball. Good luck to the lad, wherever he ends up. Honestly, if the money was reasonable (which i'm sure it is), i'd rather be a big fish in League 1, than a player nobody rated and was never used, in the prem/championship.

churchmans added 22:59 - Oct 30 SPIVVYSPACKYCHOPS,SCOOTERBLUE i think rhodes would be an awesome player i dont think that the gap between leauge 1 and championship is that great! look at norwich,southampton the last two seasons as an example and there two strikers! lambert and holt and i wouldnt be surprised if any of the current top 5 in leauge 1 rise to the top of the championship next season when they come up

Yes a few. The vast majority are still behind the man and the side As for Sharp I wonder if he might be brought in to as a replacement for Chopra. Maybe he has more issues then are being reported. Hope not because if PJ can put a bit of width in the side ie Edwards moving forward with Wabara as a proper right back then who knows But it is not all doom and gloom like the few keep banging on about.
