Lavery in Bradford Talks
Lavery in Bradford Talks
Thursday, 3rd Nov 2011 22:30

TWTD understands that departing Town striker Caolan Lavery is in talks with League Two Bradford City. Yesterday, Blues boss Paul Jewell revealed that the Northern Ireland U21 international had told the club he was moving on having been offered terms by a League Two side.

Jewell said: “His agent got back to me on Monday and said that they have refused Caolan’s contract.

“Because we’ve offered him a contract, we retain rights to compensation. He emailed [club secretary] Sally Webb [on Wednesday] saying that there’s a League Two club that want to take him.”

We understand that long-time admirers Leicester City have offered the Canada-born frontman a trial, while Aston Villa have also been monitoring his situation. Tabloid links with Spurs were dismissed by Blues academy chief Sammy Morgan last season.

Prior to Lavery turning down his contract until the end of the season, the Blues boss had planned to send him out to get first team games: “While he was here I wanted to get him out to Rochdale on loan just to give him experience.

“In my view is that he’s put more credence on money rather than an opportunity. I’m a little bit disappointed in him. But he might tell you that a six-month contract offer is not what he wanted.”

The Bantams are believed to have offered a longer-term deal and an improved chance of regular first team football than would have been likely at Portman Road.

Lavery, whose two-year scholarship was extended until his 19th birthday two weeks ago after he suffered a serious knee injury last season, netted five goals in seven FA Premier Academy League games for the U18s during the early stages of this campaign, plus a further four for the reserves.

Hope it doesnt come back to haunt us, I can see what PJ was trying to do keep youngsters on their toes until they've made it. Sounds to me like it wasn't even about length of contract but the money. Which seems a stupid decision by the boy since he's still only 19. Should have learnt from Cresswell. Caolan could be on more this time next yr with Ipswich than what he will bw stuck in L2

If we rated him (read Wickham, Whight (sp?)) Carson, then he would have been offered a longer term pro-deal. Clearly we do not, good luck to him if he wants to drop down a couple of divisions to get regular footie.

There goes some good young talent, shame but i don't blame the club for this one, the lad has mind his mind up. You can't offer players big contracts when they haven't even played a game for the club, they need to earn that. Who says he will be able to cut it at championship level. We don't want to players who have no desire to play for Ipswich Town.

Caolan, give your head a good shake while our offer is still on the table.

In any event I wish you well.

This has got agent and greed written all over it.

The kid has had his head turned by money - nothing else. No disrespect intended toward Bradford, but how in hell is a move to them deemed a step up or career progression?

Bradford City is a good move for Lavery. He has the potential to be a world-class striker but he needs games. Can't understand why we don't just send him out-on-loan. Lavery has been exceptional in the U-18's. His freetaking taking reminds me of David Beckham in his early days but he seems to base his overall game on Wayne Rooney. Easily our best young striker by a long-way.
If he goes to Bradford, I can see Villa taking him on board 12 months later.

I'm pretty annoyed at this. I know the boy hasn't played a game for us yet, but he obviously has some talent. We have obviously offered him something in the region of £1,000 a week, and maybe he wants £2,000 or £3,000 something like that.

But Jewell will be perfectly prepared to pay Andrews £15,000 to £20,000 a week, and Bullard and Bowyer the same.

I'm despairing because we are crying out for young players, with something diferent, some skill, some pace.
So what if he doesn't make it, surely its worth the gamble.
Jewell said in the AGM that he would be scouring the lower leagues for this type of player and we have one on our books who Premier League managers are even looking at!
His new scouts will be watching league 1 and 2 matches and the reports back on Jewells desk on a monday moorning will be "Lavery has another stormer for Bradford" etc etc.
I for one would rather we struggled a little bit and used younger and hungrier players in our 1st team.
I just don't identify with these expensively overpaid players coming down from the Premier league, who could not care less about our club.
They are obviously characters and have helped to an extent, but I don't see a future to it. Stockdale could go back at any time, Sonko is here for just a year, Collins until December, Bullard is like a timebomb who could either get injured or go mental at any time, Bowyer is 34, Scotland contract expires in june, Ellington is old and not very good, Andrews is 31, Ingarmarrson injury prone, old and here for just a year Emmanuel Thomas is one of just a couple of young players we have, and is plain hopeless, our captain is doesn't speak etc etc.
Where is the future in that.
I'm angry at Jewell and Town this morning, and just wanted to get it off my chest.

still think the boy is being silly as money seems to b his priority. even if it was 500 pounds a week he was offered its still good money with the chance of more to come. alot of people working long hard shifts & getting less

A player leading Ipswich for Bradford in order to get more money sounds somewhat bizarre! It's poor how his agent didn't get back to Jewell. Oh well, I am sure we can find some bright new talent out there in the lower leagues to replace him.

You have to earn a contract and that involves working hard for it. Forgive me, but this does look like the boy wanted it handed on a plate and rather than knuckle down, he is prepared to drop down the divisions to get more money now. Sometimes it doesn't do any good, to give too much too soon, some kids can handle it, others can't.

It's the kind of dilemma lots of young boys face at his age. Do they stay on at college or university, or do they get a paid job straight away? Depending on their own view of things they do not see the bigger picture that others might and do not necessarily take advice. As they say 'a bird in the hand . . . . ' It will be a shame to lose him but at 19 he needed to be closer to the 1st Team by now if he really had a chance to make it with us.

Mr Jewell, ITFC would like to offer you a six month contract.
Take it or leave it.
You go on about wanting the youngsters to show a hunger to succeed yet play a bunch of ex premiership 30 year olds who are only here for their final paycheck.

Youth will be our success for the future !!

How many 19yo in the real world are on a grand a week? Hell I'm 41 and on a good week I may get half that. He's already had knee problems so that could come back as yet. If all he's worried about is money then good riddance to him. No way should the club be held to ransom by some jumped up little prat. He was given the chance to prove himself but he thinks he's better than that. Could be a lucky escape IMO.

I love it on here that he is described as potentially 'world class' ,based on what exactly. As much as we all like to think we have some knowledge of football if any of us were that qualified we would be doing it for a career . A six month deal and go prove yourself is a fantastic opportunity for any lad .As bobble says - if he was really that good he would have featured . I think the same may be ahead for likes of Carson - people start talking big money( namely agents) and they start believing they are the real deal . Football is full of Lavery types - where is John Bostock ?

Just shows the problems of running an expensive academy when theres no decent reserve footie to be had.The gap to first team is difficult to bridge, managers under pressure for instant success just cannot give their young players time to settle at the top level.Big gamble to pay them decent money to go out on loan to clubs that cannot afford to pay them.No real anser you cannot blame Lavery for wanting first team footie at a reasonable level.

Why do people always harp back to Rhodes when a young striker leaves?

Convenient not to mention Bowditch or Billy Clarke?

brian_a_mul added 09:22 - Nov 4
If he doesnt want to play for Ipswich than let him off. tbh I cant see why he would leave for the money, as said earlier he would earn more here if he cracked the first team next season.

I think he just wants the security of a longer contract. Maybe his parents & family were worried with short terms offered and the possibility of unemployment. With the way the economy is today, young footballers are not guarenteed a career. This way he has a longer contract and a chance to prove himself in League football.
