Collins With Town for Extra Week
Collins With Town for Extra Week
Wednesday, 16th Nov 2011 08:59

Defender Danny Collins will now be with the Blues for an extra week after he briefly returned to Stoke during the international break. The 31-year-old’s 93-day spell was temporarily halted while he spent time with his fiancée Danielle after she gave birth to their son five weeks early.

Manager Paul Jewell explained the situation: "Danny's been with his family and went back to Stoke for a short while but we've recalled him again.

"It made sense for a number of reasons and means he will now be with us for the Derby game on December 17th."

Jewell feels that this, in addition to regular changes of central defensive partner, is probably behind Collins’s recent dip in form: “I don’t care who you are. When you have something as important as that, it can affect you.”

Previously the Blues boss has said he is keen to see the Wales international at Portman Road when the transfer window reopens in January with the player also interested in extending his time with Town.

Meanwhile, Leyton Orient are reported to have asked about striker Tamás Priskin's availability for loan during the ongoing talks regarding Town's interest in winger George Porter.

Priskin, back in favour with the Blues and in goalscoring form with Hungary over the last fortnight, is unlikely to be interested in a drop into League One having turned down a loan to Leeds earlier in the campaign.

I really wish we could sort out the centre back problem. Currently we are no further forward in sorting it out.

2 injury prone 30+ journeymen and a pretty good loanee do not make a defence capable of promotion. Delaney isn't a option, he's hasn't got a football brain. He's clueless.

I'd hope PJ is looking to strengthen our achilles heel before he starts spending on stars of the future.

Good news - but we will still be woefully short over the Christmas period. PJ needs to look into this and quickly. Sonko - although decent IF he plays - is so injury prone it is unreal. Add the icelandic fella to that and it would seem to me that PJ has really failed to address the defence: Two very injury prone has beens - on frees - and one loanee who will return to Stoke soon and no doubt stay there - particulraly considering his unfortunate personal circumstances.

"Oh Danny boy, the Town, the Town are calling"
"From Stoke to Ipswich, and down the M6 toll"
"The summer's gone, and all the goals are flying in"
'Tis you, 'tis you must comeback and stop them going in."

Why did'nt we say when players have the day off on Sunday's after games Collins had returned to Stoke? It will add up to another week. Sounds like we are taking the mick to me, I am surprised the FA has allowed it.

Sonko may be injury prone but he earns his pennies when he plays. Yes, he's a stop gap but I'm happy to have him. However I agree we need more cover.

First and foremost wish Danny and family all the best.

However, is it me or have we moved from PR to playing at The Priory as either mentally or physically, Stockdale apart, every other first team squad player has had some ailment or emotional issue!

Just hope Collins' head will be in the right place - always worries me when a player is about to become/becomes a father and whether his mind is on the job at hand (playing for itfc) ,plus on top of that lots of sleepless nights no doubt.

We seem to be hopeless at the back minus Sonko.

Sensible comments from Jewell showing understanding towards a player.

So, Collins can play against Derby and there are only two December matches that he will miss then potentially: Leicester away on 26th and Reading away on 31st. Surely Delaney, Ingimarsson, Sonko and Smith can cover two matches between them, so I don't think we are woefully short. Also, Sonko has looked a great signing on a free transfer and his hamstring injury is just unfortunate.

It sounds like the George Porter talks really are happening then. Let's get him and a few other youngsters through the doors ASAP to liven up our season.

Never realised loan deals were that flexible. Signing him for an extra year would be nice.
