Burley Moves to Cyprus
Thursday, 10th May 2012 19:32

Former Blues boss George Burley has been named the manager of Cypriot side Apollon Limassol. Burley, 55, has been out of work since being sacked by Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day 2011.

The former Scotland international right-back has signed a one-year contract with an option for a further season with the Cypriot First Division (top tier) side.

I can recommend the home made wine in Aphrodite's Cellar (near Woolworths) in Limassol.

With a name like George, he'll fit in well in Cyprus.

Timmy, I don't think we should be sending George an SOS, he's done nothing since he left us 10 years ago and was partially responsible for the financial mess we found ourselves in and still recovering from.

Norwich have had a fantastic season and are 13th in the Premier League. George Burley took us to 5th! I will remember him for that, for Wembley 2000 and for the sort of development and progression in the Championship that we need to aspire to now. Good luck George.

Beautiful part of the world, Limassol. He's fallen on his feet somewhat there.

Read a very interesting article about the Cypriot league the other day, mostly about how many English players are relocating there. With the success of Apeol and others, apparently the league is now quite competitive at a reasonable level, so some have found success there. For you proper football buffs out there these include Chris Dickson, ex Charlton striker, Mark Burchill once of Celtic and Pompey and ex Birmingham and Palace winger Julian Gray, whilst Lomano Lua Lua spent a season there.

Best of luck to Burley out there, can imagine worst places to work.

For God sake come and save us George!

Think that's a bit harsh buryblue. He did well at Hearts and Derby until the board interfered! The Scotland job and Palace maybe not!

Keaneish, ok I'll sort of give you that, he probably did better at Hearts and anyone has a hard job up here.
I'll always be grateful for his efforts before the money wasting, the play-off final win and the 5th place Prem finish but when given money he wasted it (much the same as Keane did) and between his transfer spending and Sheepys stadium building all too much was gambled unwisely, yet some still call for one if not both of them back.

George Burley, Ipswich Legend, Great Ipswich Manager, how some of you on here can slag him off is beyond me!

George from all the genuine ITFC fans we wish you well in Cyprus and I'm sure you'll enjoy the weather.

A town legend. Will never forget everything great he did for the town over the years. I wish him all the best and hopefully some better times ahead.

buryblue77 - harsh indeed. Apparently Burley wanted to prioritise staying in the premiership after taking us to 5th place. Sheepshanks wanted to push on for Champions League and was the force behind being pushed into buying more players. Some people will focus on the Finidi George and Sereni purchases rather than all the successful players he brought into the club and some of the most attractive and entertaining football to be seen at PR since the late Sir Bobby. IMO the best Manager we have had since Robson and the cr@p we have had to watch under the last 2 / 3 managers in particular! His record since has not been as bad as you make out either and has had a lot of interference from Owners at many of these clubs.

Good luck in the sunshine of the Med George.

*couple of unnecessarily negative comments on here, can't be Town fans... but I have to respond to the done nothing since he left here...

Hearts would have won Scots Premier League had Romanov not interfered. It would have broken an Old Firm grip on title that has existed since '86 (when Hearts messed up on final day).

Took both Southampton & Derby to play offs. Both of whom were heading for oblivion before he was appointed.

Scotland have been a basket case for a while and as for Palliss.... he won away at Naaridge.

George Burley = Absolute legend! When I win the lottery and buy out Marcus, you will get your statue along with the other two greats. Enjoy life in Cyprus. Lived there for a year: Nice relaxed place and great food.

OK, I've been slated on here for my opinion and I will aplogise if I have caused any offence, I will admit I did not know (if it is the case) that Sheepshanks made the call for extra players for a Champions League push, I was always of the understanding that Burley had strengthened the squad so it could cope at least with UEFA cup football. However I wasn't just focusing on the Finidi and Sereni transfers, we must remember someone also decided that Marcus Bent was worth £3m and the infamous Ulrich le pen. Having said that, we never seem to fair well with spending money but I will admit, our 2 best big money signings will be Hermann and Stewart, both signed by Burley.
I will never forget the joy I felt during the play off campaign of 2000, Magiltons hatrick to fire us into the final and the win against Barnsley but it cannot be forgotten that money was wasted on both players and stadium (obviously the stadium had nothing to do with George, and maybe the players were his choice, maybe not) to which Sheepshanks is ultimately responsible.
Typical that when you have an opinion you're slated for it, but it is still my opinion and to answer pendejo,I AM A TOWN FAN.

Hope it works for him - our most successful manager for some time. Joe Royle did well when replacing George - particularly during a terrible financial time. However, poor managers since then.
