For no reasons other than my own amusement, I've been keeping track of the Championship standings since Mick McCarthy took charge of Ipswich. That's not just a tally of points acquired by Ipswich, but by every team in the division.

And as it stands, the table makes very good reading. Two months into the new season, and 12 games gone, the table is really beginning to take shape. They say that it takes a good 10 games before you really know how teams are shaping up for the season.

Hull are the early season pace-setters, having amassed an impressive 26 points from their opening set of fixtures. Cardiff complete the automatic promotion places on 25 points.

But this is where Ipswich pop up. Despite having experienced a somewhat tricky start, with early thrashings at the hands of Crystal Palace and Leicester, they sit pretty in third place on 23 points, despite the goal difference of -2!

Going into the third month of the season, Ipswich will really fancy their chances of forcing their way into those top two places, making the clash with Cardiff on January 12 a real top of the table extravaganza.

For the record, the remaining play-off places are comprised of Middlesbrough, Millwall and Watford, sitting on 22, 21 and 21 points respectively.

It’s nice to be enjoying a season where Ipswich are not in a relegation battle two months in. As fans, we’ve almost forgotten what it feels like to be at the top end of the table.

The relegation battle, is of course fascinating still. Barnsley have really struggled to get going, and are rooted to the bottom of the table on just six points. Blackburn are hardly any better off on nine points, while Peterborough complete the relegation threatened trio on ten.

It all sets everything up quite nicely, and who knows what the rest of the season holds. I’ll keep you updated!

Re. current form, apart from the obviously unknown outcome of loan situation otherwise i can only see us getting stronger, especially as MM has been promised funds for his own targets. Therefore next few months are a preparation for next season, when i can see us up the REAL table!
