Consumer rights used car help! 19:46 - Mar 4 with 4642 views | Duckegg | Bought son a car (cash), nothing special just an old Fiesta for 1500. Its mechanically fine and a few bumps and scratches. however over night it chucked it down and the inside is flooded. I've traced the fault to the windscreen. I want my money back, what chances? Anyone out there know what my rights are and how best to go about it?

Basic rights then. Any item, big or small has to be fit for purpose. That's consumer law. Even sold as seen. Sure, weeks down the line you'd have no chance, but the next day, yes.

Be polite but firm. You're in the right. If he offers a repair, (satisfactory standard of course), and you believe the car is worth it then maybe go with that. [Post edited 4 Mar 2017 20:45]

If you really wanted money back, a small claims court would award in your favour. He'd soon back down if he knew that was where this was heading https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts/legal-system/taking-legal-actio [Post edited 4 Mar 2017 21:17]

Consumer rights used car help! on 09:36 - Mar 5 with 3294 views | gerard1947 | My son had an expensive problem with a truck albeit a couple of days out of warranty. It was purchased from a dealer. The repairers found an obvious previous bodge which had been done by the previous owner backed up by a fictitious garage receipt. Because of the warranty the dealer refused to take any responsibility initially until I threatened Trading Standards. I took a friend to the meeting to take notes, which were copied and handed to the dealer after the meeting. The dealer agreed to settle the repair bill which was £3k. Do a bit of research, check your rights, be firm, don't lose your rag and don't give up. [Post edited 5 Mar 2017 9:39]

I work for the largest car dealers in Britain, personally I wouldn't buy a kit kat from them. My advice is if you're only spending £1500 go to an auction where you will pay around £800 for same car and if anything is wrong with it you've got £700 to put it right. Our company get 90% of their used cars from auction anyway. On top of this, a warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on.
