The Beat is a legend. Even the Daily Telegraph agrees.

But, in an age of Hyperbole, it's difficult to celebrate the truly great. I loved Thijssen, Muhren, Whymark etc, but if they are truly legends in spite of either never winning anything or having a relatively short Town career, then where do you place Beattie, Wark, Butcher, Hunter, Burley, Mills?

The over-use of superlatives leaves you with nowhere to go to celebrate true greatness, unless you are the Beat - the one who stands alone.

I was explaining to a couple of young teenagers yesterday just how good Beattie was and explained that Ipswich were a team that regularly finished in the top 3 over a decade, without winning it, and Beattie was head and shoulders our best player.

I explained we were an Arsenal, Liverpool or Spurs of today and so Beattie was like a Sanchez, Kane, Suarez or Salah - the best players for those teams during the last decade, arguably better and he wasn't even an attacking player.

I told them to imagine a defender for those teams that was so good he was deemed even better than their current star player, ones that are worth £150m or so and rightly adored over the world as absolute superstars.

That is what we had. Incredible really.

Poll: How many points from 18 would Lambert need to have to actually be sacked?

Small point of order though. Thijssen and Muhren won the UEFA Cup with us.

In my opinion the truly great players that we have had(in my time)have been Beattie,Mills,Wark,Muhren,Thijssen,Hunter and Crawford.
A fraction behind them I would have Burley,Mariner,Butcher,Osman,Viljoen,Whymark,Brazil and Elsworthy.
A whole load of players a fraction further back from them.

All of them legends but we have also had a number of players that could be seen as legends of ITFC(for varying reasons)but some of them not too close to being classed as greats-Roger Osborne for instance.

I have probably missed some that deserve(in my view)to be on that second list but I think that the first list is of the true greats.

You've got them all bar Ted and Sticks, I think.

Based on a combination of apps and success I'd split them a bit more:

Beattie

Mills, Wark, Crawford.

Burley, Hunter, Elsworthy, Phillips

Mariner,Butcher, Thijssen, Muhren

Osman, Viljoen, Whymark, Brazil, Leadbetter.

Perhaps add Marcus Stewart to that bottom line?

Edit: Also I think if you include Osman there you also have to include Clive Woods

I was considering whether to put Ted in my "fraction below great" section but decided that he was,in my view, one of the many in the group a fraction lower still-probably also including Jimmy.

Both he and Jimmy certainly in the legends category though.

Whichever way you look at the greats and the legends The Beat is out on his own in both for me.
