And land is in short supply in the cities.
Moreover genuinely productive arable land (for growing crops) is in short supply the world over (we in the British Isles do better than most, an accident of geography, geology and climate). Irrigation helps, but is severely damaging to the world's water supplies.
Pastoral land is a bit more plentiful, as most animals can eat grass or leaves, which are tough and grow in more places than grain, rice, maize or millett.
