I would be a little cautious about writing the USA's obituary just yet, for all its faults and failings. It's still a massive and very wealthy nation, with an extremely high degree of patriotism among the populace.
Memories of a bloody civil war in which their two- or three-times great grandfathers may have fought (i.e. still relatively recent) will mitigate against such a thing happening again, except among a tiny minority. And it will take a pretty big external shove to break them apart. The economic fallout from Covid might be bad, but they survived the Great Depression within (just about) living memory, in a much weaker national position. |  |
