One player for Town you wished you'd seen play that you haven't 11:27 - Apr 30 with 3447 viewsgainsboroughblue

These best elevens are great reads but also makes me wish I was slightly older sometimes, just to fully appreciate what a great side we were. I started going in the early 80's but was too young really to fully appreciate the gravity of how good we are.

I saw Beattie play but not at his peak, same with Big' Al Hunter, but from what I've been read from posters older than myself, I wish I could go in a time capsule and watch Jimmy Leadbitter.

Any more for any more?

George McLuckie

Seeing McLuckies name brings back memories. In those days there were only 4 ball boys - 2 at each end either side of the goal - and I was the only one of those who turned up for reserve games. I was stood behind one side of George's goal and the ball went the other? I thought he is neaer- let him get it and if looks could kill I wouldn't be here!

Seeing all the names in this thread makes me realise again how fortunate I have been to see all the players from Garneys, Parkèr and Elsworthy onward

As a boy Jimmy Leadbetter was my favourite and one incident involving him always comes to mind - perhaps the because I was an impressionable boy but I don't recall hearing anything like it since. I have no idea what the game was but I know "Sticks" was running with the ball and he was tackled and there was a loud CRACK which was heard right round the ground. There was a deathly hush as everyone feared the worst - it h to be a broken leg. Jimmy Forsyth rushed out with bucket and sponge in hand, St John's First aid ran on with a strecher and as they got to him Jimmy stood up and walked away! He was a great player.

I think you might be confusing George McLuckie with George McMillan because McMillan was the goalkeeper-both here for the 1953-1958/9 period though.
