I guess with this new Warner / Cummings tracking app 11:30 - May 5 with 4236 viewsgordon

We're going to find out why it's actually not such a great idea to have a Government full of charlatans that think it's fine to constantly lie, cheat and mislead the public.

They could, but I cannot imagine they will. They want countries to use the decentralised model because of security concerns.

Isn't that a bit rich given the amount of personal data both Apple and Google harvest from our phones?

Perhaps, but at the end of the day it is their operating system. They probably don't want every country coming up with increasingly wacky ways to abuse it.

I'm not going to criticise them for doing the right thing.

OK so just to give you an idea about how Android and iOS work, there is no way they are going to be able to access your GPS without making it incredibly obvious.

In Android, you cannot access it without detailing you will be wanting that specific permission. Once you actually try and use the GPS, if you have not prompted the user, the OS will ask you if it is OK for the app to have access to the GPS. There is no way round this without being a system level application.

You cannot install system level applications on the fly. I know because I've literally tried to do this for an application that was used by the NHS that I helped develop.

So that was you trying to bypass the install script then? ;-)

You are the obsolete SRN4 to my Fairey Rotodyne....

The amount of fun we went through trying to install system level applications over the air without user input...

We already had system level application as we'd modified Android, but even then because of the way Play Store worked, it still wouldn't let you install the application without a user hitting a button, which the product manager did not like.

So we ended up essentially opening a shell, and force installing the application during the night with some commands.

Eventually that broke and then we had to modify the operating system on the fly. Good thing everything in Java is virtual

The source code if out for anyone interested.

iOS:
https://github.com/nhsx/COVID-19-app-iOS-BETA

Android:
https://github.com/nhsx/COVID-19-app-Android-BETA

I couldn't see anything at first glance that was nefarious, it's basically exactly like what they said. Below is a technical deep dive for those interested.

The only thing left really to do is check the APK on the Android is the same as that in the repo. As it is, currently, there is not too much to worry about when using it.

I would still like it if you were allowed to delete your data afterwards.

EDIT: Oh also if anyone is interested in how they got round the scanning issue, here is the Android code for that bit,
https://github.com/nhsx/COVID-19-app-Android-BETA/blob/master/app/src/main/java/

Yeah, but 1984?

I’m quite enjoying the irony of people pontificating about dark dystopian futures based how much data the government will hold on you, via the medium of Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/etc.

Sounds like we've started building another App based on Google / Apple API. Still, good to have a go.

Indeed.

I do think it's OK to be cautious about how much data you give over to the Government.

In this case both the NHS and the Government already know where you live. I'm sure if they were actually interested they could find out your GPS movements as well.

The only thing from an unlawful perspective at the moment is whether the ID counts as PID data or not which I think is with the ICO. That also explains why (as Gordon posted) there are developing an app using the Apple / Google model in case (and also incase their hacks around the restrictions don't work as well in the field).

Yep, makes me laugh a bit. A few months ago my boss emailed me a link to something he was thinking of purchasing, just before knocking off time. This was on a work mail account and work PC. By early evening, any visit to Amazon or Facebook on my personal iPad at home was met with adverts for the said product
