Isn't that a bit rich given the amount of personal data both Apple and Google harvest from our phones?

Perhaps, but at the end of the day it is their operating system. They probably don't want every country coming up with increasingly wacky ways to abuse it. I'm not going to criticise them for doing the right thing.

In Android, you cannot access it without detailing you will be wanting that specific permission. Once you actually try and use the GPS, if you have not prompted the user, the OS will ask you if it is OK for the app to have access to the GPS. There is no way round this without being a system level application. You cannot install system level applications on the fly. I know because I've literally tried to do this for an application that was used by the NHS that I helped develop. |
So that was you trying to bypass the install script then? ;-)

The amount of fun we went through trying to install system level applications over the air without user input... We already had system level application as we'd modified Android, but even then because of the way Play Store worked, it still wouldn't let you install the application without a user hitting a button, which the product manager did not like. So we ended up essentially opening a shell, and force installing the application during the night with some commands. Eventually that broke and then we had to modify the operating system on the fly. Good thing everything in Java is virtual

Yeah, but 1984? I’m quite enjoying the irony of people pontificating about dark dystopian futures based how much data the government will hold on you, via the medium of Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/etc. [Post edited 8 May 2020 9:19]

Indeed. I do think it's OK to be cautious about how much data you give over to the Government. In this case both the NHS and the Government already know where you live. I'm sure if they were actually interested they could find out your GPS movements as well. The only thing from an unlawful perspective at the moment is whether the ID counts as PID data or not which I think is with the ICO. That also explains why (as Gordon posted) there are developing an app using the Apple / Google model in case (and also incase their hacks around the restrictions don't work as well in the field).
