Nigel Clough . ..... 23:03 - May 19 with 8474 views | ArnieM | Should we try and get him to come to Town. Would He be a good option IF Lambert was ever likely to be shown the door ?

Nigel Clough . ..... on 21:41 - May 20 by Herbivore | If we keep Lambert it's hard to see us getting back into the Championship anytime soon. If we let him go we may well go back up. It's not rocket science, fella. |
If only it were as simple as this simpleton approach.

Wow, great insight from yourself there. Clearly we've got a genius on our hands.

Not quite. Merely stating things are not as simple as your 'approach' claims. Mere matter of contracts and finances to take in to account as well.

And those things need to be weighed against the costs of keeping him, like not going back up and probably fighting relegation next season. I'm not sure what you're struggling with here.

Nigel Clough . ..... on 09:29 - May 21 by Herbivore | I know you didn't like Mick but saying he's "still out of work" when he only left the RoI job a few weeks ago and we're in the midst of a pandemic is a bit off. Your views on Jim are somewhat rose tinted as well, we were pretty turgid for much of the season he got sacked in and Evans had given him over a year and a serious wedge of cash to spend and he'd not taken us forward from where we were the previous season. Magilton isn't cut out for management imo, he's got a touch of the Roy Keanes about him. |
Turgid it might have been , but Jim Magilton did quite well for a rookie manager in his first attempt at managing IMO. Perhaps he could be forgiven ( be8ng a rookie ) for not gett8ng it right, but he did at least have us in top half of the division. Well spotted, I dont like McCarthy! Actually I really DID like what he offered when he first arrived. He was exactly what the Club needed. Any struggling Club in fear of relegation, needs Mick McCarthy and his turgid tactics to steady the ship. But there comes a point where you ask, “ what next”....what’s the next level you can take us too? And he couldn’t . His style and tactics became so boring to watch , I could tell you the game plan before the game kicked off. It never changed. Fans ( that’s plural so indicates that it’s not just me feeling this ), had had enough of it and wanted more. Frustrations then start to run high, and tit for tat comments are made. The problem was McCarthy didn’t like being held up for scrutiny. He is arrogant. He became very obnoxious towards the public and frankly He lost my respect when he started to trash and bad mouth the supporters. Sorry, but you don’t do it, even if you feel you are right to do so. He is a public figure. His language towards the fans became unacceptable. He’d crossed the line. Even in his Irish role he couldnt resist the chance to rub our noses in it yet again. demonstrating how small minded he is and what a Big chip on his shoulder he is still carries about all things ITFC. He should be bigger than that. We’ll see how long it is before he’s employed again. But without doubt , in my view, it’ll be a Club at the wrong need of the table. He’s a bel5 and braces type of manage4, and lacks finesse...or the ability as he sees it to play “ sexy football”.

I'd take finishing top half in the Championship 4 seasons out of 5 playing pragmatic football over being midtable in League 1 playing no better. But it's all in the past now anyway. Agree to disagree on Magilton. He didn't do enough in that second season, the footy wasn't great and we weren't really in contention for the play offs despite being one of the biggest spenders in the league. He'd started to lose the plot a bit as well. Just not really cut out for management imo, only one proper job since leaving us and that ended badly and relatively quickly.

Very true, but they often say the second season is harder don’t they. I agree he’s no5 cut out for management Per sa. Too hot headed frankly. I read the post on here suggesting Towns next manager ( as I’m sure there will be one), NEEDS an Ipswich connection. I can’t help but keep looking to George Burley. I know he’s been out of the game. But he knows how to play the game in an attractive way. He’d bring the younger players through For sure. I think he’d jump a the chance frankly. Something HAS to change on our recruitment front, because we keep getting it wrong and every time there’s a managerial change , there is total upheaval at the Club as the new man tries to make his mark.

Burley or Mowbray would be exceptional appointments.

My worry with Burley is that he's been out of the game far too long. It's been a decade now more or less since he was in management. I'm up for him having a role at the club but would want a young coach alongside him, someone like Dyer maybe.

I hear this repeated a lot but I think it's somewhat irrelevant when he consider the type of manager Burley is and his philosophy. Burley was way ahead of his time in terms of tactics, very rarely did we play a flat 4-4-2, I mostly remember us playing a 3-5-2 under him or occasionally even a 4-3-3 with Scowie as an auxiliary right midfielder/forward when needed, he's a long way from your "old school" football manager. What is it we're worried he's lost in the last decade? Desire? He's applied for the job on multiple occasions so clearly wants another crack at it. I agree that having younger coaches around him would be important. Dyer, Nash maybe Hogg would consider a return considering the family connection? Kenny Daglish was out of management for a decade before having a second go at the Liverpool job, although it was short lived he managed to bring home Liverpool's first trophy in 6 years. I understand people's concerns but I sincerely believe Burley would still be a great appointment.

Thing is Burley is from the SBR school of football isn't he.....and so is Dyer. (at Newcastle). so in many ways it might not be a bad combination to have next season. assuming there is to be changes. I'm pretty certain both ex players would jump at the chance. NB, meant to add. I know for a fact (from a family member of the player), that TM would "not return to Ipswich whilst Evans is the owner". No prizes for guessing why. [Post edited 22 May 2020 12:24]
