Eastville 1978 22:48 - Dec 11 with 4360 viewsHarlestonblue

Is there an Ipswich Town FC history buff who could resolve an argument and enlighten us with the attendance at Eastville Stadium for the famous 5th round FA Cup tie against Bristol Rovers on the snow in our glorious cup winning run in 1978?
I do recall the result was 2-2 and you can see the goals on youtube. We won the replay 3-0 at Portman Road.

I went to the replay but not the Eastville game. I did go to Eastville for a cup game in the mid 80s. It was freezing cold and the ground had burned down. The toilet portacabin had a lake swilling up and down inside it as people rocked it back and forth. Hilarious. I seem to remember we won 2-1 with a goal ballooning off somebody’s shins from miles out.

I was at the FA Cup tie at the rugby ground in 1998 when we drew 1-1. My main memory is being pelted with hail!

Ah but who else has seen us play Notts Forest at three grounds-City Ground, Meadow Lane and Wembley.

We have also played Arsenal at three but I did not go to the League Cup game.

I just researched Forest playing at Meadow Lane. 1968? Due to a fire in the main stand at the City Ground?
Apparently Forest played 6 "home" games at Notts County and failed to win any of them.
Arsenal v Ipswich at 3 different grounds? I assume you mean Highbury, Wembley and the Emirates.

Never saw us play at Meadow Lane and I wish I’d not seen us battered by them at Wembley, but I did see the Arsenal three.

Talking about Wembley. Can anyone identify the 4 occasions when Ipswich Town has played at Wembley?

Arsenal 78, Charity Shield 78, play off final. The outlier is probably a trick question about Town playing against Wembley FC in the Amateur Cup.

You got 3 right Radlett. Not a trick question though. We played at Wembley Stadium against another London team before 1978. Will provide the correct answer soon.

This was mentioned at the time of the FA Cup Final. I seem to remember we played there in the 20s or 30s.

I know Leyton Orient played a couple of home games in Div 3 (S) in 1930, but that was before Town were in the football league. Non-League Ealing played a few games there so I'll go with that.

Yes, October 1968.

I remembered David Best being in goal for us but on looking at the details in TMWMTT it was actually his first appearance for us having signed three days before.

Ray Crawford and John O'Rourke got our goals in a 2-1 win.

Yes, those three grounds for Arsenal.

I personally wouldn't include cup games played on neutral grounds. E.g. we have played West Ham at Upton Park, Villa Park & Stamford Bridge (ugh).

Stinker of a day. Very windy as well. I remember a thrown-in blowing back over the taker’s head.
I ended up in the home end on the open terrace and I’ve never felt so cold in my life.
We wore that classic Abbot Ales granite and pale lemon striped away kit.
Rovers fan stood next to me said it looked like Newcastle’s shirt if his missus had washed it.

Not quite the coldest I've ever been at a football game. That was Charlton v town on New Year's Day, 1997. We drew 1-1; Adam Tanner scored a penalty. It was absolutely bitter & if I hadn't got a hot chocolate at half time, I think I would have expired.

Pretty good guess!
Ipswich Town played the Ealing Association at Wembley Stadium on the 13th October 1928 in the Southern Amateur League. Not sure how or why but that was our first appearance at Wembley. We had to wait 50 years for our next one!

I remember Kieron taking a shot from outside the box and deliberately shooting backwards so that the wind would take the ball towards the Rovers goal. It fairly flew over the keeper's head and just over the bar. If it had gone in, would have been a contender for goal of the season!
