COVID cases 22:03 - Dec 23 with 1059 viewscatch74

Germany has controlled the virus about as well as anyone in Europe - but their figures aren’t far off ours currently. Wouldn’t be surprised if they haven’t had the new strain there for a while.

Indeed. They’ve had more deaths in the last two weeks (10k) e than they’d had in total up to three weeks into October.

This new strain is really starting to take over at a worrying pace.

Germany has technically been on Tier 3/4 since the start of November.
Pubs all shut, restaurants only for takeaways, gyms & cinemas closed.

After 8 months of taking all the precautions under the sun, I ended up catching the bloody thing from my wifey in November. Sick as a dog for 2 days (headaches, lucid dreams, the sweats, no energy & totally lethargic). But that was about it. Whereas she was ill for 2wks & still has a dry cough.

Lots of different strains of the virus & it clearly affects people differently.

The numbers in Germany probably don't reflect the new strain very much yet. I believe they had 1000 deaths on a single day last week which was by far the worst day they had in the whole pandemic.

I would think that the new strain is definitely there but will probably drive the numbers coming over the next few months rather than what we have seen. The Germans would easily be able to identify if the existing cases are the new strain or not as it would have a distinct genetic signature.

I suspect more information will come out over the next few days.
