Labour calling for all arrivals to quarantine in hotels 14:53 - Feb 11 with 2713 viewsStokieBlue

Based on the idea that we don't know exactly where the Brazilian and SA variants are and that as it stands 29 of the 41 countries where the SA variant has been found aren't on the red list.

They are estimating that up to 10,000 people per day are arriving from countries where the variant has been found but are not isolating in hotels.

That is quite a lot more draconian than the current and even implied Tory policies on entry (which caused a debate yesterday) and would almost certainly mean no holidays for quite some time as not many people are going to pay 1750 per head to quarantine upon return.

Am sure there are lessons we can learn, and Aus is clearly in a better position now than we are.

Worth noting a few differences too, namely we import a far higher share of our food, and much of that is by road/ferry/Eurotunnel rather than by contaainer ship.

And our solution is now visible, a vaccinated population with less transmission and crucially far lower rates of death from the vaccinated population.

How hard we now shut down our borders and for how long, far better informed people than me will decide based on the health benefits, social benefits and economic benefits of keeping our borders open/closed.

Sure the debate will go on for some time :-)

I think by and large it's too late for the UK to learn the lessons from Aus and NZ. All three countries are islands and the AUS/NZ response was to take advantage of that fact by shutting borders immediately.

Their governments made the case early for shutting borders and have been pretty consistent in how they have applied this path ever since. So the population has understood, whinged a bit and then got on with it - confident that the government has a plan and is executing it without prejudice.

Whereas, the UK's government's recent suggestions of quarantine and limiting travel (and even then they've suggested this will be temporary) is very much a case of shutting the stable doors after the horses have bolted - only to discover they burnt down the stables a few months ago and made absolutely certain that the horses had rabies before they bolted...

I know I mentioned this in my previous post, but the Australian government's response has been a model of strong leadership. Prepared to make difficult decisions, based on expert advice, and then showing no sign of wavering.

This time last year, the PM's approval rating was 35% after the horrific bushfires and his holiday in the middle of them. This in a country where Prime Minister tenures tend to be measured in months. Now, his approval rating is hovering around 70%.

It breaks my heart to see what that clown and his cabinet in the UK are doing. It's a f***ing shambles and no wonder the population at large are just done with it. At least with Trump he was true to his form on a whole bunch of things; with BoJo it's just rank incompetence rather than being a dick - which in some ways is worse because you can generally mitigate when someone is being a dick.

That is an impressive overview Bluelagos! Information there that I'd forgotten or indeed, just didn't know.

I believe I heard Dan Andrews say today that vaccines are months away yet, even before they start to roll them out. So it looks like we've got to hang our hat on isolationism and quarantining.
