Facebook has gone a bit wrong in Australia on 08:22 - Feb 18 with 422 views | DanTheMan | I agree that the amount they blocked is wrong, but honestly I don't see Facebook turning around and saying "well, no more news then" as really their fault. I really don't understand what the Australian Government is thinking here, the law they are making is very strange.

Facebook has gone a bit wrong in Australia on 08:27 - Feb 18 with 407 views | StokieBlue | Surely it the Aussie government causing this though and FB are just trying to cover themselves by being too draconian. They have fixed it now it seems. No love at all for FB but this rule seems to be badly thought through. SB

Facebook has gone a bit wrong in Australia on 08:29 - Feb 18 with 401 views | TractorWood | I'm not sure what the law is trying to achieve. Facebook are just trying to protect their IP by setting a precedent for other Governments thinking about curbing its power in law. It's a listed business and Australia will be a disposable market to them. It's pretty aggressive but I don't think it's wrong per se. It can do what it likes, just millions of people are 'dependent' on it. [Post edited 18 Feb 2021 8:29]

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that this might well be a Murdoch play. I remember years back he threatened to pull all of his news sites off the Google indexes. https://mumbrella.com.au/murdoch-well-probably-remove-our-sites-from-googles-ind I wish he'd have followed through on that lame threat.

Oh it's clear it was/is a 'protest' to the Aus Govt. However, it shows how quickly social media companies can remove access to content if they want to. I'd seen reports of this action has removed access to candidate pages before an election in 6 days, but left up the incumbent as it is treated as Govt. Also shows how quickly they could have shut down Trump if they were so inclined.
