DoF critical in modern game - Brendan Rodgers 07:11 - Feb 25 with 747 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

See the video below when interviewed on Sky Sports (assuming it's ok to post) - very interesting just how clear, yet critical, he believes the DoF is in the modern game.

Of course we're not the size of Celtic, but this would probably be a key part of the "structure" Lambert mentioned last week.

I agree with everything Rodgers said - I'm just wondering how much we lack in the structure at Ipswich.

Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?

Depends on the manager doesn't it? I think in Rodgers case it's absolutely crucial because he is a fantastic coach and tactician. He doesn't want to be involved with the other part of the game.

I think so. Brendan Rodgers is an elite manager in my opinion and he has improved and developed a lot since his time from being the Liverpool manager, but when he was at Liverpool, he was reluctant to work with a DoF so his opinion has changed and might be a reason he's gone from a very good manager to an elite manager.

In fairness, Leicester are a very well run football club though.

He was very happy with the DoF relationship down here at the Swans. An absolute top, top manager imo. He prepares a detailed dossier ahead of every match apparently, or always used to. And then builds all that up into his footballing bible. Incredibly thorough preparation and reflection. And he's an excellent man manager too - very emotionally intelligent and gets the best out of his players.

He was also superb at explaining to the fans how he wanted to play and why. It seemed to make a real difference and helped him bring the fans along on the journey.

It's a world apart from anything we've had here for years. I can't help but wonder what might have been if he'd have come in as Keane's assistant (although I can't see those 2 working together - a clash of styles).

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Spot on, and it also depends on the DoF. Someone too high profile can overshadow the manager if you’re not careful.

We sort of tried it once before with Lyall effectively ‘moving upstairs’ and Mick McGiven becoming first team coach. It was a disaster and a big relief to get back to the traditional manager model with Burley.

That was a long time ago though. The game has moved on and just because it didn’t work with those individuals doesn’t mean it wouldn’t work with others. Would have to be the right appointments though, as you rightly say.
