What I like about Paul Cook 13:45 - Mar 19 with 3126 viewsMattinLondon

Early days but there’s a few things about Paul Cook which I like.

He doesn’t t call players by their nicknames.
Doesn’t make excuses for a poor performance but is considered in his criticism.
Thinks that all professional teams, regardless of leagues, should be able to play in a modern attacking way.

I fully realise, that this post could well age horribly but can only judge on what I’ve seen and read so defat.

I agree to an extent but what bothers me is he is trying to install a style of play but not use the players at his disposal to do it.

- He wants the fullbacks to push on high and wide, overlapping, yet plays Chambers there over the more suitable Matheson. Maybe Chambers suits the defending narrowly mantra, admittedly
- He wants centre backs starting higher up the pitch yet our most athletic centre back (who should have the ability to therefore get back quickly) has seemingly been sent to Siberia. This also forces the full backs higher and... well, see above
- Players encouraged to run with the ball yet Bishop is one of the only players to be dropped by Cook
- Other than the first 20 minutes v Plymouth I wouldn’t say I’ve noticed a difference in getting players in the box on the break

Agreed but there’s likely a man management balance to be had. Wholesale changes would be disruptive and the easy way to start some unrest. Given we were on a good run of form, it’s be difficult to make too many changes. I’d say Bishop is being rested a little rather than dropped and Cook is experimenting a little.

However, today I’d expect to say 2 or 3 changes - some of those being in defence to address some of those points we’re in agreement on. It’s no secret how Cook likes to play so it’s only a matter of time before a few faces emerge to suit that style.

Regarding the RB slot, if Ronan Curtis is fit, Chambers will likely start but hopefully KVY will get some minutes today.

Thing is Cook has to try and create a winning mentality with the squad ( Lamberts) at his disposal. Don’t know what you think, but I feel this squad is a spent force . It’s tired, and stale . I think we’ll see the real Paul Cook when he’s got in the players he feels can play the style / formation of football thst he’s got success with. What this squad has shown is that it’s incapable of doing what’s asked of them on a consistent basis. I think PC is a good way down the road of who to keep, who to offload ( for various reasons) . I think he will be professionally ruthless over the coming weeks / months.

And there lies the issue.

The players he wants.

Evans knows we have an inflated squad so surely he’ll be trying to keep players as opposed to what we should be doing - trimming the masses and recruiting a little bit of quality.
