Which of the two 1972-95 badges below is the correct one? Because the larger image is the one which we are using this season, but the smaller image is the one shown on the Ipswich Town Wikipedia page as our old crest? Also, the smaller image badge seems to be the one worn by Kevin Beattie in the below image.

The two different designs of the ball are what first caught my attention.

I'm a tad confused.

Dunno, the one Beattie's wearing there looks more in keeping of the horse's shape than the small [Wiki] version. I.e. its back is deeper whereas the Wiki one its back has a shallower curve.

Apart from the ball the top one looks the closest resemblance.

If anything they both look like slight variants from the one on Beattie's shirt.

The top one is wrong.

I’ve got two math worn shirts from that era, and they are both the Beattie badge. As an aside, the badges and Adidas logos are slightly ‘imperfect’ on match worn shirts as opposed to replica mass produced ones. Indented to the left, and wording slightly askew.

Imagine that man walking into tomorrows training session and showing a little mental attitude. What a shocking contrast!

It's not right is it?

Too elongated and as you say without any definition.

The one above though has defined mouth features which the shirt badge doesn't appear to.

As I say, neither match the shirt.

The letter 'C' on both of the badges looks wrong. The top one seems to be cut short on the right hand side and the bottom one looks to be too closed compared to the one on Beattie's shirt.

It's actually taken from the club website - an archived version of it is here: http://web.archive.org/web/20060703003202/ http://www.itfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/HistoryDetail/0,,10272~345822,00.html

In these days of precise vector artwork (shapes defined mathematically and precisely irrespective of size) we can expect a perfect match and digital sharing of precise images, but I suspect things were a little more ad hoc in those days (by necessity perhaps) and different manufacturers and image producers had to create their own version for their own processes and equipment. So there are probably a lot of different versions about, many of which were officially approved.
