UEFA Cup 1981 09:54 - May 10 with 3221 views | charpur | Hello, I am a journalist at The Athletic. I would love to speak to anyone who attended the 1981 UEFA Cup second-leg final and has some interesting stories to tell. Boat trip over, interactions with players/manager, celebrations, memorabilia, any nuggets would be great. UPDATE: Thank you for all your help with the research. John Wark and Russell Osman share their stories in the piece, enjoy! https://theathletic.com/2597390/2021/05/20/when-ipswich-town-ruled-in-europe-and [Post edited 20 May 2021 8:23]

UEFA Cup 1981 on 10:16 - May 10 by 66notout | Lazy journalism and how do we know you’re even genuine? |
Surely it's research? That was a bit mean to a lady too. Say you're sorry or I'll line up Footers as your next lodger.

UEFA Cup 1981 on 17:10 - May 19 with 829 views | powinswitch | Was 16, and doing my O Levels then. Cannot remember how I got there, but believe it was a ferry from either Harwich or Felixstowe. Think I must have gone on something organised, but remember when I left the ferry saw the police in Holland at the ferry terminal all had weapons. I thought bleeding hell we are Ipswich, not blooming Millwall Bumped into my cousin, in a square very close to the ground. He was same age, and we went into the ground together. Great atmosphere, made better when Franz scored. Remember at some point the Alkmaar fans at the other end setting light to something, but it wasn’t that major a fire. We could also see lots of Union Jack flags at the other end tied to the fencing, and I think they had club names on which were not ITFC. We ventured round to that end, and found ourselves with what I believe were squaddies based in Germany who I assume had got tickets from the home allocation somehow. Anyway at the final whistle they kicked down the fence and we were on the pitch. I have a recollection that somebody tried to steal a players shirt, and I think Terry Butcher was involved and got a bit irate. Suddenly found myself stood next to Sir Bobby, but just as quickly he was gone. It was bedlam. On the ferry on the way back they had a disco, but it was just Town fans singing for what seemed like the whole voyage. What a team that was. I thought it was always going to be like that. I just thought we were one of the great clubs in European football. Looking back, the way we were able to wander round the ground and end up in their end was ridiculous. How did these guys with no allegiance to ITFC manage to get in the Alkmaar end and hang flags with English club names on the perimeter fencing. For the home game, the ground wasn’t even full.
UEFA Cup 1981 on 17:46 - May 19 with 786 views | footers | Just came across some wonderful photos someone had posted on a private FB group of their trip. Really interesting to see as a younger fan those heady days in full colour. Must have been some trip! Kessingland supporters group if anyone knows anyone pictured? (P.S. If it was you I stole these from, apologies - just thought they were too good not to share!)
