Depends how we define freedom.
I'm sure the Taliban think they are freeing the country of 20 years of occupation and proxy rule.
Obviously I don't agree with their politics and the freedoms they will inevitably take away from society.
But Western governments always define freedom in adherence to our current geo-political view point and that is why freedom fighters and terrorists become interchangeable over time. |

Especially viewing the world, allies/enemies and the need for interventions on the basis of your own interests. That’s never going to help anyone except yourself (and even that’s debatable).
Interesting to see that still at play in Syria. Assad, the Syrian government and Putin’s forces aren’t great shakes but the opposition seems to be indirectly promoting the HTS islamists (al Qaeda-adjacent and Taliban-supporting) into the frame. Seems like another Afghanistan with the Taliban or Iraq with the rise of Daesh because we still can’t see the woods for our own interests. Not least the millions of innocent civilians who get caught up in this and the many thousands who die. | |

It simplistic because it’s simple. That’s how things were back then, and luckily for you and me the insane Soviet empire lost and disappeared. I don’t particularly consider Mandela to be one though, he was more of a fellow traveller, I’m just providing context. |
