I’m not one for political statements but this one was overdue on 09:55 - Aug 30 by GlasgowBlue
Perhaps they could bring the Northern Independence Party on board to give the alliance some real political heavyweights .
Anyway, good luck with this latest venture. But I fear that if you can't even get the Labour party to stop their infighting of the past six years then I don't hold out much hope for bringing on board another four or five different parties.
As you know, the NIPs were/are a protest party with a solid underlying point about the state of Labour re: opposition, the North and the regions in general. They don’t have any electoral clout but a lot of their policies would hopefully form a good proportion of a progressive alliance’s platform. I’m sure they’d be onboard to some extent.
And who knew the most loony, ideologically narrow, factionally warring and unelectable group in Labour would be the Labour Right? Well, me and anyone else who’s been paying attention over the past decade or more. 😀

Some of the NIP policies were alright but it’s basically Corbynism. They won’t be the basis of a progressive alliance because for that you’d need compromise with the Lib Dems and the Labour moderates. I think the alliance is unworkable anyway and would prefer a non-aggression pact without the SNP/Plaid but that’s another story.
Starmer’s recent announcements seem like a good middle ground that the left and centre left could get behind. Stuff that was in the Corbyn manifesto, but a slimmed down version of it without the foreign policy isolationism. The £10 minimum wage, Green New Deal and enhanced employment protections have all been included.

I don’t pretend to understand LibDemmers but if you base the alliance around PR and a Green New Deal then there’s a lot of sensible “corbynist” ideas to come in and actually engage the millions of voters who rightly care most about material improvements to their lives and communities.
Starmer’s recent announcements are a “good middle ground”? It’s bland and unambitious stuff.
I’ve never seen a political leader and his advisors get outflanked so much on almost every issue. Never mind the paucity of ideas and policies, they’re completely useless at the business of politics. About the only thing you can give them some “credit” for however tawdry is how they lied to the members re: a Corbynist platform to get Starmer elected as leader.

I mean this in the nicest possible way but your recent posting reminds me of this.

Those 3 policies were in the Corbyn manifestos but now you’re calling them bland and unambitious?

Yes as part of a much more ambitious platform.
Here these are the “jewels in the crown” of re-launch number 43 and in the context of the pandemic too. So 2 years on from 2019 and it’s just tinkering around the edges and barely more than the Tories had themselves already indicated.
This is weak stuff and reflected by his plunging popularity despite having an open-goal with BoJo et al and a remarkably tame media for once. Now if you told me that the real Labour leadership strategy was about winning power, influence and money for grifting individuals who want to serve the establishment and collect the spoils then I would understand how things are going to plan. But in any meaningful sense for a democracy, Starmer and his team are a complete disaster.
