Cracking result last night and a very decent second half performance 08:51 - Oct 20 with 807 viewshomer_123

from the lads.

Great to see 4 different scorers as well. I could not believe the amount of space our full backs were offered and it was really pleasing to see Donacien make good use of that, odd that the Cowleys did nothing at all to negate that last night.

I thought the second half was very good, some good football played with all the forward players contributing and playing some nice football - really pleasing to see us actually build on the first goal and start the second half on the front foot.

The first half was still a little concerning though - again quite a number of individual errors at the back that Pompey didn't capitalise on and how they didn't score from 12 yards I don't know. Possibly the first time we haven't been punished for errors, which is also a nice change.

Not sure how the second half would have panned out had Bonne not chased down and caused the error (any young footballer wanting to learn the game would do well to watch the work Bonne does off the ball) and finished in a Stewart'esq style but that doesn't matter because we capitalised on it.

Pompey looked very poor as the game progressed whereas we looked better and better, which was also pleasing to see.

One small shout out goes to Burns, who's control of a long pass in the wide right position, was sublime - I really do like him as a player, I think he's bene standout for us so far this season. Aluko is interesting as he's clearly comfortable either side and had some decent touches and passages of play - he's growing into it, which is good to see.

I thought a difference last night was that we didn't piss about with the ball at the back for long periods, we looked to move that ball wide or forward a bit more quickly and, considering the weather, we did use the ball well in the second half.

If we can now back up that performance at the weekend, then it's something to genuinely build on. No corners turned just yet and the first half was still a little too familiar in terms of errors and some poor defending but we worked, we got our reward and four nil didn't flatter us in the end - could easily had one or two more.

Enjoyed that last night, especially the second half - let's follow that up with a win at home against Fleetwood.

Yes, agree with most of that.

That Harness miss was a key moment. From the TV angle looked like it was going in too and, as you say, that's unusual this season. Big errors from each of Donacien, Toto and Edmundson plus two poor kicks from Walton.

On Burns, the only thing I would like to see more of is composure in the penalty area, blazing a shot over late on at Accrington with players better placed for a cross was poor (and he knew it) but happens a bit too often.

Aluko's touch and control is really good, him and Chaplain definitely helping us in tight areas. Not that Celina has been bad either, we start to have good options playing well to rotate in those positions.

And yet, we struggled to get that three behind Bonne into the game in the first half. Solve that consistent problem and things look a lot better.

I think that is a fair note on Burns, I would agree. Overall though, I like him...direct, energetic, quite skillful etc.

Yes, that three behind Bonne didn't get into the game, Edwards was doubled up on most of the time and we couldn't get up or beyond Bonne enough, as you say.

That shot from Harness looked in and Walton beaten all ends up - no idea how close it actually was in the end but looked in all the way!

Edwards was too deep for much of the first half, he was picking the ball up well inside our half. He didn't get as much of the ball in the second but think I would need to watch the match again to see whether their doubling up on him left more space down our right where the second goal came from - certainly Donacien had an enormous amount of space there.

That's the way I I saw it Penney and Edwards seemed to have far less time and down that side than Aluko and Donacien - Edwards was closed down very very quickly last night. Not sure that meant he ended up dropping deeper and deeper to get the ball?

I still cannot get over the fact that Pompey did nothing in that second half to mitigate our right hand side, criminal that.

Cowley is right in his post match that Pompey didn't respond to going down but, tactically, I'm not survey Cowley helped their cause last night - nor with their subs either.

Having just watched the highlights, it looked like everyone bar Donacien was on the left for the second goal! We really did start that half well.

The only sub that seemed to help them was Ogilvie who stabilised things a bit.

Agree with pretty much everything on this thread. One of the things that seems to have gone unsaid so far about last night was the crunching tackling - from both sides in the first half, much more from us in the second. In spite of the errors, it's been years since I've seen us going in so hard and efficiently to win the ball - one of the many perennial problems of the last regime. It was pretty industrial at times (ah, fond memories!) and the fact we registered 17 fouls to 9 is oddly a plus point when both sides really went at it at the start - and tbh I thought the ref let us off a few times in the first half..

Crunching tackles and not enough support for Bonne in the first half and right at it and getting further up n the 2nd. Sounds like the MM adage that you firstly fight for the right to play football at the beginning of the game and pinch anything you can (which we did). And then once on top go and take the game - which Cooks team were very good at. Perfect nights work.

Aluko played a lot narrower than Burns for most of last night cutting inside. I found the balance of him and Donacien a bit weird at times as Donacien is never the player to get beyond him into the channels.

This approach seems to be a slight shift in mindset and tactical approach maybe to counteract Curtis who was non-existent. Either way, it wasn't the sexiest but it worked very well. Kudos all round.
