A lot of that transfer business just looks disjointed now 08:58 - Nov 24 with 532 viewsgordon

I think we'd be in a better position overall if we just hadn't signed some or all of the likes of Tom Carroll, Louie Barry, Rekeem Harper, Scott Fraser, Bersant Celina, Hayden Coulsen, Cameron Burgess. With a smaller squad we'd have more cohesion, a more regular first-eleven, and back-up from the likes of El Mizouni, Woolfenden and Dobra would be more than fine at this level. Certainly Chaplin and Harper and one or two others have looked like they're really struggling with confidence, probably not expecting to be a reserve player in League One.

Would also allow for getting a boost from bringing in 3 or 4 in January if necessary - as it is it's going to look ridiculous and panicky if we sign more players in January, and will further bloat out the squad to Lambertian levels.

Cracks are definitely starting to show in our transfer business - this may partly be because of Cook's poor tactics and team selections but overall we just don't look balanced.

We sign Fraser for a decent amount of money because he scored a few goals last season in the centre of midfield, so Cook forces him to play left-wing when he's clearly said that's not his best position.

Pigott is another one who played well but in a different system, and Burgess was just a panic signing after missing out on Bradley.

I think the lesson is that you can't just sign 19 players in a window while keeping a balanced side. This is all down to Cook for replacing a perfectly decent squad to cover up for his own inadequacies.

Two players for every position.

Goalkeepers: Walton, Hladky
Right Backs: KVY, Donacien
Left Backs: Coulsen, Penney
Centre Backs: Burgess, Edmundson, Nsiala, Woolfenden
Central midfielders: Carroll, Evans, Harper, Morsy
Right wingers: Aluko, Burns
Left wingers: Celina, Edwards
Attacking midfielders: Chaplin, Fraser
Strikers: Bonne, Pigott

The issue is they do not all play the same way, so we need to adapt our style depending who we pick.

Where has this idea that last season’s squad were ‘perfectly decent’ come from? They were awful. A mob of 40+ professionals hiding. They even tried to get the manager out, as some of them had successfully done a couple of years before, by not turning up in games. Hammered at home by Swindon and a good many others. How many times did we beat a top ten team under Lambert? Once? Twice?

That Cook has made a dogs dinner of constructing his team with more than decent resources at the club’s disposal is a separate issue. He should pay the price for that and that alone in my view.

Cook came in and talked about how large the squad was, then proceeded to "reset" the squad and coming out the other side with one nearly exactly the same size as it was before. Same old issues again. You can't create a cohesive team when so many players will be left unhappy by sitting on the bench/out of the squad.
