Damo Delaney / Crystal Palace 16:23 - Feb 16 with 1728 viewsGarv

Don't know if anyone's clocked the Palace documentary on Prime but it's a good watch for anyone interested.

Generally interesting to hear the story of Palace around the time they were in admin. around 2011/12 and got bought by Parish.

On the footballing side there's a good feature on Delaney and it really drums home how popular he was there with everyone. They interviewed him and you can see why, he comes across as a good bloke and you can see why he'd be a good dressing room voice. He scored some belters for them as well. Just makes me wonder how it went so wrong with him here. He talks about going from negative atmospheres (QPR and Ipswich) to positive ones at Palace.

Aside from anything it was a disgrace really that he left when he did because we had no defenders, but when you look at what he achieved there as well and how he played, it's a bit sickening that we lost him as a player. He was unfairly criticised a lot by our fanbase I felt, remember how solid he and McAuley were together for a season?

I vaguely remember some kind of gents agreement with him and Jewell about him leaving for America? He mentions that his plan was go home to Cork for a few months and then join a club over there when the season started in Jan, but then Palace came in. So it's not as if he completely sold us down the river - either way he clearly didn't want to be here.

Also references to Holloway when he replaced Freedman there. Holloway had made up his mind and as far as he was aware he was coming to Ipswich, so turned Palace down (talks of a great contract offered by Evans). We then got Mick instead so Holloway went to Palace.

Garvan's name pops up a lot as a 'defensive no.10' and set piece specialist as well, which I thought was interesting. Funny to think he played such a part in that season for them, albeit as an understudy to Jonny Williams by all accounts.

I have to confess I thought Delaney was rubbish at the time. All over the shop. A groan every time his name appeared on the sheet. McAuley on the other hand looked slightly awkward, made the odd mistake but was always a good player and I thought so at the time.

Obviously I was totally wrong about Delaney. He had an excellent time at Palace and deserved all the plaudits he got. I’ve no idea why it never worked for him here. The players around him, atmosphere at the club? Who knows.

I guess some players suit certain places at certain times. Mark Venus springs to mind. Bang average career, going nowhere. Comes here as a makeweight in the Sedgley deal and becomes a mainstay of Burley’s defence. Outstanding.

I’m pleased Delaney fulfilled his potential at Palace..

We had some real quality on the books during that era...the likes of McAuley and Delaney went on to clock over 100 appearances in the Premiership.

Unfortunately, a combination of toxic & micky mouse leadership never saw us get the best of these players. Whether it was appointing dinosaurs such as Jewell, lazy horizontal recruitment of non-industry specialists from the Marcus Evan's group or just a chronic lack of investment into key areas of the club...how could have we expect any player to thrive here...

I think what Mark Ashton said about it being like moving a two oil tankers is very true. For example, i know that most senior players don't use the gym at the club as it's tiny and lacks the specialist equipment needed for conditioning and recovery. I think over the next few years, we will see a significant investment into things like the training ground, but also the ground with the Cobbold stand being redeveloped.

I think a lot thought that at the time. Was it a game against Forest, he went to clear away from our goal line, sort of kicked the ground, fell over and it trickled in?

Delaney's career only blossomed when Hull started playing him at centre back, although he sometimes filled in at full back. Keane signed him from QPR & immediately started playing him at full back, which I thought was daft. Delaney & McCauley should have been one of the best centre back partnerships is that league.

Keane's last game, summed it up really.
