I think it went back to the Millwall game in 1978 when Sir Bobby said of the Millwall hooligans that we should turn on the flamethrowers and burn the bastards.

I think Jimmy Hill may have spoken out against that or misquoted SBR, although I could be wrong.

I do remember a few weeks later being sat a few rows away from Jimmy Hill at the Highbury semi final against WBA and he was getting digs abuse.

Jimmy Hill got abuse wherever he went as everyone thought he sided against their team - this is possibly an indication of why he was so good.

I certainly don't think it was an Ipswich thing.

As you know - The Scots hated him and used to have loads of banners with Jimmy Hill is a Poof.

I could never work that one out.

Yes but he was specifically getting grief at Highbury for his comments after the ‘flamethrower’ incident.

My memory isn’t what it was but I remember that like it was yesterday.

The jocks still chant ‘Jimmy Hill is a poof’. Apparently it is because he was biased towards the English in major tournaments. Which being a proud Englishman is quite normal.

As I explain to my Scottish mates, if BBC Scotland bothered to cover Major tournaments rather than just broadcast the English coverage then it wouldn’t sound so pro England.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Yes - but why a "Poof"?

Why not a "C**t"?

I was selling Tartan hats outside Villa Park in 96 when Scotland played Holland in the Euros. I took my Scottish mate with me to do the sales while I just picked the hats from the bag - I couldn't believe the amount of Jimmy Hill / Poof banners. To be fair they were quite a bigoted bunch, if I forgot myself and started to speak to someone they just called me an English c***

Edit - maybe they knew what they were talking about
