In the strange world of the SPL for teams below the Old Firm we need something to keep the interest up. Hibs seem to need a bit of a kickstart so he may do very well there. But it’ll have an entertainment value whatever happens.

Gmpf. I’ve never seen someone care but not care so much. Maybe you’re the one that needs to lighten up a bit?

do you ever think the Old Firm duopoly could be broken or would be better for Scottish football if they join the English league and left a more level playing field for the other teams?

No idea. I think we’ve got some sort of stasis now where nothing will happen unless there’s a European Super League breakaway at some point. In theory, there’s no reason why a team couldn’t get everything right for a season or two and split the Old Firm but it’s always so temporary given the massive discrepancy in resources.

I seem to remember some talk a little back about a 'Northern European type league with Scotland, the Scandinavian countries and the top Belgian annd Dutch team joining it, but I dont think that every got very far

Actually, that’s a good point. Maybe something similar could work. You can compare it to the URC in rugby that’s made up of Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Italian and now South African teams. That’s been a great way to raise the quality and hang on to the bigger French and English leagues. The problem is the same as the European Super League though. How to justify the major teams in Scotland and Scandinavia etc. breaking away without promotion/relegation for the rest? There isn’t the pay-off of a European Super League to make all that turmoil and recrimination attractive.

Its a tough one and without Celtic/Rangers I guess there wouldn't be a lot of money in what was left of Scottish football
