How did Baggott do today? on 01:06 - May 1 by michaeldownunder

Thought Baggott did OK but a bit lightweight in some situations, maybe a loan to Salford for next season ? Mick Mills was talking about Edmundson and Burgess not fitting into our three at the back system and Baggott being a better fit. We played a back four when JD went off, will we do this next season?

He is only 19 and not used to playing against experienced players with the same height but more bulk than him. I think it will come with age and experience but I certainly think that, for the long term, his comfort on the ball makes him more suited to a modern-day back three than Edmundson or Burgess, who are more old-fashioned type defenders. So in this sense, I agree with Mick Mills. Who knows what we will play next season, but having seen our back four yesterday, I think it would only work if we have better attacking and defending full backs than KVY and Penney.

The fact that other keepers with the same level of experience as Hayes have stepped up and coped, I don’t see what the problem is? We aren’t asking him to be our number 1, by playing week in, week out.Walton has shown he’s pretty durable. Isted at Luton Town had never played at Championship level and he’s done perfectly fine and his background is very much non league. Also, having the perception that experienced players are going to sign for peanuts because Ipswich want to sign them, they won’t. They’ll want paying and paying well for sitting on our bench and I was looking from that perspective too, they’ll probably want a lot more than someone like Hayes is actually on. When I reread your original post you sent yesterday, which I did appreciate, I still felt it was quite negative, very much focused on Baggott’s mistakes, however the additional posts you added within the thread provided more balance. So thank you for that.

I am very much aware and understand the point you are making, but the club’s scouts and coaches would’ve seen Hayes play and train. I’m more than happy to go with their judgement, they must see something in him to resign him. He might not have played at L1 level, but it doesn’t mean that he can’t cope. There’s various examples where players have stepped up with no previous experience and done very well, they just need that chance. Look at Richard Wright, Burley started him in the EPL with no previous experience at that level and he was 17! Like I said earlier, we are talking as if we need a new number 1, we don’t, only a back up. Why would the Crewe lad sign for us to come and sit on our bench? I’m presuming he’s had a season playing first team football, surely he’d want to find a club where he can do that? If it was me, I know I would rather be playing than just simply bench warming in the hope I might get the odd game here and there.

Not really, but the game is all about opinions that’s what makes it interesting. It would all be rather boring if we all thought the same.

He put in the kind of performance you saw from Woolfenden pre his Swindon loan. Oozes confidence on the ball, you could tell he’s been trained to be like that on the ball through the academy. Turned a couple of Charlton players which got everyone on their feet.

Couldn’t win an aerial duel in the first 20 minutes. Think he thought he was playing 23s football where he probably one every single won. Once Stockley outjumped him 3 or 4 times, I think he realised he needed to battle harder, which was evident when he cleared the corner and got the bang on the head. That would of been a huge moment for him because he towered above everyone else in the box. From then on, he looked more comfortable with it.

Like Woolfy before Swindon, he had a few lapse’s on the ball. Sold Bakinson short in front of me in the second half, and another down to Penney. That bouncing ball in the box was awful from Walton, didn’t look like someone willing to come out and use his 6ft5 frame.

All in all, an assured performance from someone who needs to do what Woolfy and Ndaba have done, and go to League 2 to learn the dark arts of defending, because he has all the technical ability to succeed. Same with Humphreys, he could be an absolute star for a ball-playing side in L2 next season. Someone like a Swindon if they lose Louis Reed.

Would you want Hayes playing 20 games if Walton got injured though? Goalkeeper is such an important position as we've seen this year - Hladky cost us so many points earlier in the season. There is no hiding place.

It's not an easy position to recruit for when you have such a steadfast number 1, but if Hladky goes we need someone IMO. We will have League Cup and Papa John's games for them to play in too, maybe we might even have a run in those competitions next year. So there will be opportunities to play.

I agree that the position is very important, just look at the impact of Walton for us after he got over his early rustiness. We’re saying we need an experienced back up keeper, but look at Hladky, he came with a very good reputation but he gave me kittens when he played at times, experience doesn’t always mean the right option. I suppose what I’m saying is if KM and his staff believe Hayes is good enough to be No.2, that’s more than enough for me. ‘If’ he’s got the potential, then give him that chance to prove himself. Just my opinion, although I accept it differs from others.
