Johnson's premiership is crumbling - the tories will reinvent themselves as what they think is electable and rewrite history to match the narrative.

If they though that rejoining the EU would get them elected; then that's what they'd argue for.

It's a matter of principle for them. They need to be in power. That's the principle.

To be fair, with the english electorate, it works more often than not.
