The Guardian has taken the photos accompanying this story at face value.

The cosmonauts who changed into Ukrainian coloured spacesuits are shown posing with the regional flags of Donbas and Luchansk, purportedly taken in response to the news that Russia has completed the annexation of the regions.

It is highly implausible that they would have taken those flags with them, when every gram counts.

Without wanting to start another massive space conspiracy theory based on ripples in a flag...

I think they look like Photoshopped Russian flags (there is a smear by one of the cosmonauts hands) and am surprised that the Guardian didn't raise that possibility.

I doubt its photoshopped, the flags look weird just because flags always look weird in zero G, because your brain is expecting them to behave how they do on Earth and they just dont do that in zero G.

and they could easily have been sent up in one of the cosmonauts care packages, they each get 5kg of personal stuff sent to them roughly every 6months but can be more frequent sometimes, its normally their favourite food, or items sent by their families, or the support staff on the ground stick in, just as like a special thing to make them feel like they arent stuck in a tin can orbiting the Earth.

the crews & mission control are still cooperating with each other, I doubt ESA/NASA will make any official statement about it.
