I like the idea of xG but there can be a big difference between different xG stats depending on what algorithm is used e.g these are xG stats for our last game:

xG_Data (Twitter Account) - FGR 1.55 v IPS 1.15
Fotmob - FGR 1.47 v IPS 0.83
Footystats - FGR 1.06 v IPS 2.65

I think the Footystats one there is xGOT rather than xG which is to do with the placement of shots rather than the locations

It's basically a way of rating chances over the course of a game. Depending on a whole bunch of variables (angle, head vs foot etc.) when there is a chance you essentially rate how likely on average someone would score from that chance.

You then tally them up at the end.

Much better explanation above.

A vast improvement on the old "shots on target" metric, but still a somewhat broad brush, when you consider all the factors which may affect the success of an attempt on goal (wind direction and strength, wetness of the ball, lighting conditions, exactly how the ball is moving when struck - particularly spin and bounce, player fatigue as the game progresses, etc., etc.). Will become more accurate as the season progresses, the sample size increases and some of the more random elements even themselves out.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
