I think ants are pretty stupid actually. They come out into my house and the flying ones fly into the windows in an attempt to get outside so why not just nest outside in the first place?
You say 'humble ant' but he looks like a cocky little blighter to me, what with those perky antenna, beaky mandibles and that 'come and give it a go' look in his eye.
Not so cocky as these two show offs though
Ants do like lording it over the other insects, with their feats of incredible strength and complex social structures.
