I'm glad Trippier got sent off for that 18:07 - Aug 21 with 3688 views | gtsb1966 | The most annoying thing for me in football is the deliberate foul when a team is breaking away. Would like to see more sending offs for that.

I'm glad Trippier got sent off for that on 15:04 - Aug 22 by SamWhiteUK | Can it be done? Does the ball have to be in play for a pen to be given? Imagine a team A's keeper is about to take a goal kick, when one of team B's players headbutts a team A player in midfield. Team B's player would be sent off... but would the goal kick be changed to a free-kick? |
Maybe a penalty can't be given until it's in play. But why not book (for unsporting behaviour) everyone (defender or striker) grappling with another in the penalty area before the corner is taken? Or employ an additional official to spot foul play once the corner is taken as the referee can't necessarily spot everything that is going on? EDIT: I don't think we make it easy for ourselves when we have a corner because our players group statically near the penalty area which makes it easier for the opposition to grab a hold. Far better for some to come in from less central positions, which is much more difficult to defend against, adds to the pace of the attack, and allows adjustment to the flight of the ball. I'm glad Trippier got sent off for that on 15:25 - Aug 22 by Ely_Blue | Well they did for about 3 weeks at the start of I think the 16/17 season when we gave one away like that at Reading on tv |
Why did they stop? It seems to me that it is really bad these days, but given there is no real sanction, it's not surprising that players will get up to all tricks.

I'm glad Trippier got sent off for that on 09:03 - Aug 22 by artsbossbeard | I've been boring people for ages on this subject AND I'm one who has always told my lads to give a foul away on the half way line to break up play and allow us to get back in to shape. IMHO, a rule change is needed here as this type of cynical play robs teams of a goal scoring opportunity. It's frustrating as a supporter when you see a 3 on 2 develop from an opposition corner, for example, only for the player on the ball to get clipped for a cheap free kick and everyone back in position. I noticed the Rangers lad on Saturday got a straight red for exactly this but the ref spoiled it by not given the Hibbies lad a red for something similar. |
The cynical foul will remain part of the game until a more appropriate &immediate penalty is imposed i.e. the sin bin. Playing with 10 men for 10 minutes might make players & managers think if this sort of foul is worth the risk.
