a few times through my sport photography, mainly at Ascot and Epsom.
At Ascot, the press room comes out into the Royal Enclosure and as such for a few years I passed regularly within about 8ft of her as she talked to her jockeys and I made my way out to the photographers stands by the track.
Obviously, (and sadly), I never got to talk to her, but a couple of things were clear, firstly how friendly and approachable she was, she always seemed to be laughing whenever I saw her and secondly how even getting that close to her seemed perfectly acceptable to her, (I can't say the same of Princess Anne).
The first time I saw her up close, I think it took me six months to get over how incredibly short she was.
I feel surprisingly sad tonight.

I was half way across Charing Cross Road when I had the same experience. A motor cycle cop stopped and told me not to move. Strangely before I could cross the road Bill Wyman and that child he married stopped right next to me in a red Mercedes convertible at the lights. Real AND Rock royalty in one road crossing.
