I think you are right, unless he was at a table for one and looking lonely.

Yes, it is. Maybe catch his eye and smile. See how he reacts to that.

And then wait until he has finished his meal and is leaving (and if the opportunity presents itself) ask "Mr Jones" if you may have a word.

And if he says "No" then apologise for interrupting him and don't write about the encounter on social media.

Of course there are people who "want to be noticed" and given special treatment. The best course of action with them is to resolutely treat them the same way that you would treat anyone else and pretend that you don't recognise them.

It’s the height of bad manners.

I appreciate that people earn their corn by being famous and it goes with the territory but I don’t know why people think it’s acceptable.

I’ve never understood it. Alex Higgins bummed a fag off me once and I wanted to chew the fat with him as he was a bit of a hero for me at the time but I just couldn’t impose myself.

Even when I’ve been at hospitality events I’ve been shy of talking to the “Guest” as they done their rounds.

Frank Bruno pissed me off as I deliberately gave him space and then he chatted my wife up in front of me. I was a bit concerned he might get his Black and Decker out.

"Humble. Eloquent. Dignified."

The complete opposite of the attention-seeking twit who disturbed him then.

What a douche thing to do.
