Andrew Mitchell is passionate about international development. Absolutely shameful that Johnson abolished Dfid though and the department downgraded to ministerial rather than cabinet level.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

For other misdemeanours and leaking to the press yes, but the words used by Mitchell were found to be as per the reported statements. Unless you disagree with the justice in the libel trials ?

I worked with a lady who was there that day, so have heard a first hand view of it.

What I will say is that behaviour and disrespect by politicians towards public servants in particular ranged from polite and pleasant to as appalling as you can imagine.

Things are even worse than I thought. A very large proportion of the "aid" doesn't even leave the country.

If you read the article, you will see that Dishy Rishi is the culprit.

With Sunak still in charge, and a £50 billion black hole, even appointing Jesus Christ as Development Minister wouldn't to make things any better.

Was a piece on last nights Newsnight on this. A Bangladeshi education programme has seen funding slashed by 75%

Pretty shameful, especially as we are pretty much on our own in allocation aid for Ukrainians against our foreign aid budgets. And we have done far less for Ukrainian refugees that many in Europe.

So the Aid budget goes from 0.7% of GDP to 0,5% and then they slash whats left from 11 to 8 Bn.

Be intereting to see how Andrew Mitchell squares these cuts with his previous good will to foreign aid. Either he speaks out or goes along with it. Not holding my breath for the tories to restore funding to 0.7%

That disrespect these days extends to the Civil Service, and has done since 2010. Whatever her failings, Mrs Thatcher respected the Civil Service and never sought to blame them. I speak as someone who worked in the Cabinet Office from 1987 to 2011.

There's already talk of the 0.5% being extended for a further two years, which no doubt will not be the last extension.

It certainly does - to the point of my boss having to wipe a certain minister’s spittle off her face after a rage.

I heard that about Thatcher. Blair was good too. Always polite, remembered birthdays of No 10 staff etc, appreciated and understood the work the CS did.

A little different to some of the current and more recent ones.

Yes, Labour were very good. Indeed, Ministers were so appreciative of the importance of the work done in our small specialist office, that we were awarded a permanent sizeable allowance, unique to our office, on top of our standard Civil Service pay.
