It sounds like she's got the knowledge and is doing the job of a much higher band in all but name, so she could be getting the corresponding salary if she had decided to go higher than a band 5. |
Sorry, it wasn't me that made the point originally. I was just trying to come to his defence in response to your post. [Post edited 5 Dec 2022 14:00]

I get that she didn't want to become a band 6 for whatever reason but if someone has chosen to stay in a certain pay band then they have to accept the pay that comes with it. If she's got 30 years' experience she would comfortably be a band 7-8 by now if following the natural progression. [Post edited 5 Dec 2022 13:42]

As I mentioned there are fewer posts to move into. Often the only opportunity to earn more is to leave the profession.

Where she works the junior sisters are band 6 & she is not interested in a management position. She wants to be a nurse & so she is at the upper end of band 5. My point is that having a ceiling of that level circa £33k is not conducive to attracting or keeping staff, particularly when the current Tory government have little actual interest in the NHS, other than looking to sell more & more of it off.

It's true that the higher you go, the more management you have to do, and the less time you spend with patients. I guess it would be awkward to create a system where you could award future pay rises based on experience and skills, to people who wish to stay in a certain band, as it would all be very subjective. I agree with the broader point, although pretty much on Day 1 of university for subjects like Nursing you are told that people don't go into public healthcare for the money.
