Truly astonishing to think how differently our parents and grandparents enjoyed Ipswich to how we do today.


It’s interesting. My grandad used to go when they were in The Southern Amateur League in the 30s, possibly before. He certainly had plenty to say about the players of that time, especially when he saw the Ken Rice Ipswich book my uncle bought for me.

He didn’t go every week, but he loved the club and took a deep interest until he died. He took me to my first game, he was hideously well connected and was a friend of one of the Directors, who used to get him the odd ticket. I think the Director was Nat Shaw but that might be memory playing tricks. I’d have remembered if it was one of the Cobbolds - I wish I’d taken more notice of these sort of conversations, but I was too young and my dad is beyond asking now.

Looking at the 1937 picture, the people that built the club in the following 25 years to the Div 1 title must have been so proud of their achievement. They probably celebrated with a drink or two.
