Sadly the Blackpool fans are realising the reality of the appointment… on 19:43 - Feb 27 by ibbleobble | Feel sorry for him? Why? He’s hardly hard up and forced to work. He chose Blackpool because he loves the game and his own ego told him he could do the job. Reality is he can’t anymore. Not sure what it takes for the penny to drop but he’s been a spent force for a long time now. He left ROI in a mess, failed at Apoael, ultimately failed at Cardiff after a bright start as he did with us. He’s now taking Blackpool down. His halcyon days are over. He’s achieved one play-off semi-final in a decade of club management. |
He didn't leave RoI in a mess.

Yes he did. Look at what Kenny had to work with. A squad of ageing pros with little to no youth being blooded. Kenny had to pretty much start from scratch to nurture and bring through talent. Mick’s reign was all about Mick. The handover to Kenny was poor and he suffered as a result. Good to see Kenny has started to get ROI playing good football again though.

Kenny was left with a play off to get to the Euros, which he lost, like nearly every other game including at home to Luxembourg. International football is about the here and now, it's the finishing school not the development squad - their poor campaign last year 'playing good football' has left them nowhere in the rankings and now with a group they won't get out of for the Euro's.

The here and now isn’t about handing over a squad of mid 30s ageing talent to build a foundation for future tournaments. Kenny recognised the need to change their approach and did so but had nothing to work with. Rankings mean nothing if the right foundations aren’t in place for future, sustained success. Southgate is testament to this. McCarthy is not.

Utterly failing to get to a tournament and dropping into Pot 4 is just never going to work for internationals - you can't afford to try and take 3 steps back to take 4 forwards because you just get stuck in the lower reaches and qualification becomes too difficult. 24 out of 50 UEFA nations will qualify for Euro 2024 and Ireland are odds against to do so - if they don't has totally chucking the 2022 WCQ group has been for absolutely nothing and the FAI will be skint

This is the big difference between club and international football. In club football you build a squad and develop it and manage it. In international football you select from all the players available to you and have no choice over who to sign. You get little to no time to develop those players and you have to manage them in a way that fits with what they are doing at club level.

ROI were in pot 3 not pot 4 and could just as easily have drawn Switzerland and Finland rather than Holland and France. They’ve yo-yoed from 9th to 50th in the rankings over the last 25 - 30 years such are the fortunes of small nations with smaller talent pools. ROI will never win a World Cup but they at least want to be competitive on the world stage and go toe-to-toe with the best and not be overawed or strangle the life out of the game. Scraping a 1-0 win away at Gibraltar and only completing 79 first half passes tells a story in itself of how dreadful it was. Fast forward to a 4-0 against Azerbaijan and one goal coming after a 38 pass move and the difference couldn’t be starker. They will struggle to qualify from their group but at least they’ll try and do it with integrity.

So you compare the Gibraltar win to an Aserbaijain win? Why not compare it with the home defeat to Luxembourg? Or compare drawing with Denmark and Switzerland as the best teams in group opposed to getting nowhere near Portugal or Serbia and just winning the dead rubbers at the end. We’ll see how this qualification goes, but every chance Kenny leaves them absolutely nowhere

I was comparing wins not defeats based on like for like opposition or thereabouts and it’s probably a little unfair to say they got nowhere near Portugal given they took a point and pushed them close to another in qualifying. Good luck to them in qualifying. A tough group but I will tune into watch them under Kenny whereas I wouldn’t have previously.
