Watson and Warren on 16:44 - Apr 23 by Skip_Intro | It's understandable that the EADT need to find revenue streams, but the problem that they have is that the only decent writers that they have are the ITFC team. I'd imagine that a significant proportion of the fans who read (and watch) Watson and Warren are young enough/tech savvy enough to circumvent a paywall or simply go elsewhere for coverage. Their real issue is that any non-ITFC content on their website is toe-curlingly bad and appears to have been written by 12 year olds who don't even know how to fact check, ask questions or do anything other than copy and paste content from emails sent in by local businesses looking for free publicity... I guess we get the media that we deserve? |
Can't disagree with that, there's been a lot of talent who have left the pool of the local press who are long time, serious journalists who have been doing the job years. Instead you now have these live reporters who are scouring social media and putting the briefest of stories online. What amuses me most is there is no fact checking of these whatsoever and stories are most likely by people who don't even know the area. Take this for instance in March this year: https://www.ipswichstar.co.uk/news/23300272.ipswich-former-bonmarche-become-flat That store has been occupied by Belfast Beds for the last couple of years, but we see the reporter here claiming it has been vacant. Anyone who knew the town would not get something like that wrong. [Post edited 23 Apr 2023 18:19]

They're pathetic. We had a reporter for one of the former-Archant rags approach us at work, asking for our comment on a sensationalised clickbait article to which we, naturally, responded 'no comment'. The reporter then proceeded to completely fabricate a quote. When we approached the Editor, we were threatened that we'd look far worse with a 'no comment' approach, until we politely pointed out that all calls to the line in question were recorded, and that we could happily prove that the quote had been plucked out of the young man's arris...

They've now put up an article explaining why they are doing it: https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/23474712.introducing-digital-subscriptions-eadt/ However I can't access it unfortunately as they've put it behind a paywall. Can't even get that right. hahaha.

Although I note that they've very bravely left the comments open (for now). Seeing how it went down with the EDP, I give it about 20mins before the comments are locked...

here's a direct quote which is sadly absolutely laughable...their journalists copy and paste from social media and emails from businesses looking for free publicity... "Every week, our journalists are out there, holding power to account, fixing injustices within our community, shining a light on the things that many would rather remain hidden and encouraging their sources and contacts to tell us the things we need and want to know. Having opened it in an incognito window, their punch line appears to be; "is a lot cheaper than the paper itself which no-one would dream of walking into a shop and taking without paying." Not quite sure that is the way I would sell the new service, but there we go.

Indeed. I wouldn't nick it from a shop, but I'll gladly have it thrown in for free with the purchase of chocolate, crisps, drink and popcorn once a fortnight.

Watson and Warren on 14:15 - Apr 23 by DJR | Partly to keep Archant going but also to keep an eye of what's going in Ipswich and Suffolk (where I no longer live) and because they aren't that expensive, I have separate digital subscriptions to the Star and EADT, and a print subscription to Suffolk Life. Hopefully, I won't have to pay any more. [Post edited 23 Apr 2023 14:15]

I prefer to read the digital paper editions on my computer because the screen is much bigger, but I also have the Star and EADT app on my phone to read the paper. The Star app has recently been updated, and I note that it now has a News etc section as well as a section for the digital edition, so it looks like I have the app that is being introduced and won't have to pay anymore The EADT app has yet to be updated. As regards the content of the papers more generally, it is infinitely better than the local news outlet where I live. [Post edited 23 Apr 2023 21:37]
