Walton

He had a number of point-winning interventions last season but generally it was more about whether our attack was firing that made the difference in games and the defensive side was less important.

In the Championship we’re going to be tested defensively far more but I think he’ll be up to that.

The bigger question perhaps is which players are going to step up to these greater demands and can cope with having their weaknesses tested more than just showing their strengths, which seemed to be the dominant theme in League One.

A case in point is someone like Davis who can be suspect defensively in a way that Knudsen for example never was. Of course, Knudsen didn’t have anything like Davis’s delivery and threat going forward but we may need Davis to up his defensive game and/or we put more defensive emphasis on the players around him.

It’s going to be a fascinating season to see how the players (and McKenna with his tactics and selections) adjust to the step up and the likely change in the balance of games. Getting our own balance right will be key and perhaps we’ll be able to read into how we’ll do that through our signings over the summer.

Just to add, I think the core team and subs that finished last season would probably manage mid-table without too much difficulty, so this is more of a luxury “problem” to see how we reach the next level in a higher and seemingly much tighter league. Can’t wait!

FrimleyBlue. I've earmarked you for most improved poster next season. Positive vibes, attending PR and finally admitting you were massively wrong about KMac.

Don't let me down!

I mean if he doesn’t improve then Jesus wept.

Woolfie in the new John Stones hybrid type role. It isn’t new btw: Beckenbauer often took up that role for West Germany and Bayern Munich.

Broadhead has already shown what he can do in the championship for a very poor Wigan side. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he scores 15 goals next season. Chaplin has been good at that level before and with his quality of finishing will score at any level if he gets chances.

Broadhead, Chaplin, Davis, Walton are obvious choices.

If you want a slightly more obscure one I would say Edmundson could come back with a bang. Feels like forever since we saw him and he’ll probably have to wait for his chance but I wouldn’t be surprised if he reminds fans what we’ve been missing. Really good player in my opinion.
