The other thing to bear in mind is that not all health and safety laws are EU derived, so maybe we just opt for higher standards here than some other countries choose to do.

And the black economy in southern Europe may also play a large part in corners being cut there, coupled perhaps with a lack of enforcement.

Having said that, enforcement may be an increasing problem here as the following indicates.

In any event, I remember when we had our kitchen done a few years ago, the apprentice carpenter only wore a mask (as he was required to do) when in the presence of someone from his college.

We should be understood is what is often bleated out as 'health and safety gone mad' is actually insurance, and the Corporate Manslaughter Act.

Whilst you maybe able to dodge umpteen safety requirements as sole trader, you will not be able to on any big building site. Everyone is covering their ars* and so ensuring should anything happen no blame can be attached to them. However, as expected the Mail will twist this to spin as EU laws oppressing the poor Brit.

Had there been a tenth of the effort put into refuting rightie lies, as there were spreading them I am certain Brexit would not have happened.

It also makes one wonder if the UK (taking the lead from the US) is more litigious than other EU countries, which in turn plays a part.
