aka - false widow spider

One of these little critters bit me while I was in bed last night !!

Any of you seen or had a bite from one of these? The bite area is red and slightly swollen. It doesn't really hurt and clearly I have survived the ordeal.

It was only the other day I killed one that was in the bathroom. Kinda hoping I don't have a nest of them !!!

Saw a couple in the garden which I promptly ‘dispatched’. Believe they are an invasive species that are surviving more in the UK due to climate change. Fortunately not seen any in the house, I don’t think the bites are dangerous as such but do carry the risk of infection.

tbf - I have shared my bed with far worse things that also carried a severe risk of infection

I never kill spiders, I always pick them up and put them outside.

However, these things look menacing. They look nasty

At least this one is unlikely to take your wallet in the morning…

My workshop is infested with them, lots of nooks and crannies to hide in. I must admit I do sometimes kill them, mainly because they're non native and they seem to nab a lot of bumble bees, in their expansive webs.

Years ago I was bitten by a spider (UK) and spent a couple of nights in hospital on a drip as a result with a rather bad case of cellulitis of the knee. I can't say it's made me treat bites and stings with much more respect, but then I've come inches away from standing on a 4 foot taipan and one or two other near misses, so I can't get too worked up about it.

I actively welcome these guys into my house. They only bite if touched/provoked and to be honest with you it’s no worse that a bee sting at a push, if they do nab you and yes, I was a nobbled by one 5 years ago in Ipswich. The UK has around 620 species of spider of which 20 will bite. It’s the type of thing the DM or DE run stories on.

The false widows in their various guises are interlopers in the UK, but climate change has accelerated their expansion.

Don’t kill em……put ‘em out.

Send me your postcode - I will happily 'jar' all of them up and release them into your bedding

Agreed - I don't normally kill things that bite me in bed of an evening.

Definitely seems to be more of them around this year. Have had to humanely trap and chuck a couple out of the bedroom in the last couple of weeks.
