Regardless of what Ashton said about trying to improve the starting line-up. What's to say we haven't?
We had a side from January onwards that was so embarrassingly above League One it was just stupid. Was comfortably a top half Championship side.
We've signed Luongo and Hirst and kept the band together. Taylor is a highly rated midfield. Hutchison a highly rated forward player. Williams is 22 and has the equivalent of a season and a half of Premier League experience and Scarlett is an England U21 and one of the highest rated players of his kind for his age in Europe, who McKenna loves.
It's not impossible that in a couple of months Williams is keeping Clarke out of the side, Taylor is now in ahead of Luongo, that Hutchison or Scarlett are outperforming Chaplin or Broadhead.
We also have a bloody talented centre back on trial who might well join. Tuanzebe, if fit is an upgrade. On paper Williams is an upgrade. Many outside the club would see the name Scarlett and assume he's an upgrade.
We now have a Top half Championship starting eleven, players who, if they come good, will improve us even further and a manager who will get the best out of everyone.
What is really important though is Sunderland made the playoffs with 69 points. We have 9 already. 42 games to get 60 points is 1.43 points per game. We could win 4, draw 3 and lose 4 of every 10 matches we have and end up beyond that Sunderland total.
Do I back this manager and this squad being good enough to win as many as we lose, after the start we have made and last season? Bloody right I do.
